I very much understand why the software hits end of support but goddamn itās irritating when something this simple is gated.
Going back to Siri on iPhone 4 (only 4S supported it despite no hardware limitation) and perhaps earlier, Apple gates features behind hardware upgrades for no reason beyond selling new hardware (eg Apple AI on iPhone 15 Pro, not plus, but itās all in the cloud anyways). This makes it difficult to have a reasonable conversation about legitimately EOL devices - an iPad thatās EOL doesnāt get the feature for med notification because itās packaged with the other OS changes and the amount of work to backport it to an older OS version is significant.
It isnāt, though. Apple does a significant amount of their AI processing locally. Itās part of why theyāre ābehindā the competition, but I actually see it as a plus due to the privacy advantages.
(When they do go to the cloud, that is, when the on-board models are insufficient, first it goes to Appleās servers, where the request is reportedly handled without any tracking or logging. If Appleās AI isnāt good enough, it will ask if it can send the request to ChatGPT, and then even that connection goes through Apple instead of through your account so tracking is minimized.)
Apple cares about privacy, or at least cares about appearing to care about privacy. Theyāre obviously not at the level of GrapheneOS or something, but for a mainstream retail phone company, theyāre better than most in this regard.
From recollection, the chip in the iPhone 15 had the capacity to do the local model and perhaps they turned it on in an iPad. Or perhaps Iām confused. That happens a lot.
The iPads with AI support are the Pro ones with M processors, same series that the MacBooks use. (Believe it or not, iPad actually got the M4 before the MacBooks did.) Unless theyāve enabled it in the newest iPads running A series processors, which may have the AI cores that the iPhone 15 Pro and later have. I donāt know, I havenāt followed any iPad news in a while. My iPad Pro is mostly an extremely overpowered sheet music device that I occasionally use for productive tasks or Moonlight/Xbox/video streaming. š
Because it's about RAM. It requires 8GB of RAM which iPhone 15 doesn't. (But 15 Pro does.)

Is that because it's too old to be updated? Never had an ipad or iphone, so I genuinely have no clue.

I mean, yeah. No OS or hardware is going to be supported indefinitely. Everything will EoL eventually.

Right, except Linux runs on 40 year old hardware, and it could run on any Apple device if they weren't an anti-competitive cartel and we didn't live in corporate dictatorships masquerading as "democracy".
Bingoā¦ itās like 3.9* iOSes out of date and my broke ass canāt afford an upgrade after paying 1.8K for a fucking phone 2 years ago.

There are unfortunately no decent Android tablets though. iPads are much nicer overall as far as I can tell.
Because android lacks cohesion there.
Apple tried to make a platform that functions as a hybrid phone/laptop.
Android tried to make a big phone and Google saved the laptop-experience for ChromeOS.
Add to this...I don't think there's a single good keyboard case for android tablets. Maybe a semi-decent one for some flagship models...but nothing that compares to the official apple keyboard.
But now ChromeOS is dying so....what do?

I mean, buying a two year-old one is probably the only way to guarantee that you donāt have to fucking root it with a bunch of ADB commandsā¦ at least one of which will be left out of the tutorial, which you will have to watch five times, on reduced speed, because itās a video tutorial made by a 13 year old or developer with a thick accent*.
