What was the worst cancellation for you?

"Worst" as defined by you. (It's a blanket question so how you answer is as interesting to me as the content of the answer.)

I thought Firefly was bad, but for me personally Final Space takes the cake. They really screwed the guy over.

You?

Yeah, it sounds cliche nerd wanna-be, but that was the first show I thought about, too -- Firefly.

The Venture Bros. Adult Swim cancels their best show for what? More Rick and Morty. That's just sad.

15

Altered Carbon. Season one was top-notch, season two brought all the nails to shut that coffin.

13

Legolas was good but the faerie wasn't as solid. Still totally entertaining though.

The OA. That was the cancellation that really turned me off Netflix and streaming more broadly, and changed my viewing habits.

The Expanse. The last books are my favorite in the series. Still hoping they finish…

11

I think it was a naturally stopping point. Maybe they can restart it with the same cast in… 20 years?

4

That is really my hope. The story picks up many years later so once the actors look 5 years older and have some grey hairs then I want them to film the next set of books.

1

Probably my answer, but it's a shame Alex (the actor) was an ass and had to get canned. Not that he was my favorite character, but it felt a bit off without him.

3

Still hoping they finish…

Ditto. I still haven't read the books, but as I understand it, the biggest "hook" for me in the show is in those last three yet to be adapted.

3

Limitless.

It really pisses me off because one of the cited reasons was the fan response, and the fan response was that "it's too unrealistic."

Oh you think?! The show about a magic pill that makes you super smart isn't realistic? Fuck off! Let us have some fantasy, FFS.

King of the Hill was cancelled to make room for The Cleveland Show. That should pretty much say everything.

King of the Hill was rebooted a few months ago. Horrible though that the voice actor for John Redcorn was murdered outside his house for being gay

Let's also remember that he (Jonathan Joss) died successfully protecting his husband's life. That doesn't make it better, but it's important.

Okay but the last couple seasons didn't respect the characters anymore. It was time.

Pushing Daisies... but it might be coming back? 16 years after being cancelled?

Really?

That show was great. I just rewatched it a couple months ago :)

1

Mythbusters. I know it had been on for a long time, but it was my go to the entire time. I was ready for it to go, and I haven't found a show that I liked as much as it.

Metalocalypse is up there too!

In recent memory, I’d say Raised By Wolves. It was flawed but interesting. It also had an interesting companion comic book. Would love to see some streamer pick the series back up, or maybe some nice graphic novels based on the story.

Similarly, Lodge 42 and Moonhaven.

6

Absolutely, RBW was fascinating and different and stunning. We were absolutely gutted when it was cancelled.

After a recent rewatch, I would have to put forward Better Off Ted as top of my list of worst cancellations. Truly underrated when it ran, the writing was witty and sharp, aligning with the humour of Scrubs and Community.

Speaking of, re-watching Community slowly peter-out over the seasons (despite my excitement for the movie!), does preclude me from putting it at the top of the list.

Lastly, for my wasted potential award, I would say Westworld was cancelled just as it sat on the edge of redemption. Season one was a masterpiece, while season two felt like a big retread. Seasons 3&4 were controversial due to the drastic shift in setting to the real (future) world, however the ending of S4 leading back into the Wild West setting was so promising!

I have words on that,

/agree is the short answer. Long answer is too long for this moment. Just, slash agree. It was a planned five seasons and we ended on a low point four season in because we dirty fuckin' humans deserve to end on a low point. But. ...

3

I was onboard with season 3 and was ok with 4 until they did Maeve so damn dirty. After that I said "fuck this show".

The story was written. They intended to end on the 3rd season... just give us the 3rd season.

Terra Nova... Would have loved to have more dinosaurs

5

To bad they thought people were more intersted in family drama then friggin dinosaurs.

2

Carnivale.

It was one of the best shows ever made, and they cancelled it on one of the biggest cliffhangers in television history.

4

There's a treatment floating around online of what the writers had planned for the next 3 seasons

2
lemmy.world

Plenty in reality, but for this thread I will say "Into the Badlands". It was a fun and gorgeous show with good action scenes.

4

That was a weirdly fun one. Didn't really like the kid but loved the protagonist and, er, I think her name is Emily Beecham. They had a few interesting antagonists in there, IIRC. Probably rewatch that one one day.

I know I am probably in a small majority, but Hailey's On It!

I watched it every day with my daughter. I genuinely believe/d that it had scooby-doo level cult following potential. Cancelled AND deleted from disney.

Which is why streaming services are a bad idea. They have too much say over what you're paying for. DVR or download it and you'll be able to watch it whenever you want. Let them host it while you foot the bill and you have no recourse.

1

Agreed. I have it on Jellyfin, the dang thing just knew I wanted it and put it on there. It must have fallen out of Disney's trash or something 🏴‍☠️

Welcome To Flatch. The show was uniquely weird in a way I enjoyed.

3

Im gonna have to check that out. I gave up on fox years ago because of their hard-on for canceling shows.

I really liked Whiakey Cavalier. Also Next was pretty sad, got cancelled because covid

2

Whiskey Cavalier was a fun action show. We need more 'low stakes' shows like it.

I forgot all about Next. Can't remember if I ended seeing the whole season or if I dropped it once I found out it was canceled.

1

At least theres a bunch of episodes. Its a shame Stana and Nathan had issues as it really hurts the last couple of seasons.

1

American vandal. Both seasons were excellent and very different. I enjoyed the next thing the creators made (players), but I really wish it was high school true crime.

1

Gravity.

It was a single season about a suicide survivors support group, it ended on a cliffhanger in an ongoing story and was unceremoniously canceled by iirc Netflix.

I was quite into it.
