Did a one shot in high school where to cast any spell you had to sing a relevant line from an extant song.

I don't remember everyone's picks, but one player pulled out a pretty enthusiastic Beatles' "got to admit it's getting better, getting better all the time" for a heal.

Reminds me of Alan Dean Foster's Spellsinger. Though in that one, the lines Jon-Tom sings when he's hoping for one effect might trigger something entirely different based on another interpretation of the lyrics.

I've never heard a GM actively try to shut players up. Usually its the opposite lol. Unless something like "My character sings [sentence]" works, I don't think I would be able to participate.

Just stay in-character and sing in abyssal until their ears bleed. Not your problem that they have to ask for a translation of your loud and dissonant screaming...
