I agree that cryopreservation is not an everyday topic yet, and even for most it's fans (including me) it is more an acquired taste. Most of us really don't "want" to be cryopreservated - we just prefer that to cremation or grave... Cryo give some hope based on educated guess.
When it comes to the state of society after reviving: It is probable that the society that would revive you honor and value human life enough to bring back preserved people. Apocalyptic society probably would not use its resources for that. Does it eliminate fully such possibility? No. But it diminishes it significantly.
Just wait until they start offering a free month trial...
What's the current status of the field? Are we still just freezing people in the hopes that we can heal them in the far future?
Is there an estimated timeline for when the first patients will might be thawed and cured of whatever killed them?
Currently we are vitrifying people with hope for future.
Current research focuses on how to provide best quality of cryopreservation. Mostly because that the biggest actual need. Eg. things like non-toxic cryoprotecting agents.
Some limited research is into reviving small mammals from low temperatures, but not from vitrification. I think that CryoPets, CryoRat or CryoDAO is active in that topic.
Currenly the bigest thing thawed from vitrification and demonstrated to be functional is a rat kidney. It was transplanted into rat and it worked.
About timelines, there are 2 separate questions.

Curing the cause of death depends on the specific cause of death. The excepted time where we will tackle aging in a usable way is around 2035-2050. Generally, I expect that we will (reasonably) tackle aging (and so also diseases caused by aging) sooner than successful revival from vitrification.
