Ross Thomas was a Washington reporter turned crime novelist. At one point he was given a list of words that he should shun because they were offensive.

One of the words was 'Dwarf' and another was "Chinaman.'

His next two novels were "The Eighth Dwarf," and "Chinaman's Chance."

Both are really good reads.
