Haven't been around in awhile, is mbin officially dead or is it still being actively developed just without much use?

8

Kbin is dead. Hopefully Ernst is himself not physically dead, but has stopped contributing. It was quite the fiasco as Kbin.social had to be defederated from since it was sitting un-administered and thus being used to spread spam across the entire Threadiverse.

Kbin's fork Mbin is still going strong, though with fewer users as time passes. There is even an app for it now: Interstellar.

It serves a very niche area though, where you want to interact with both the microblogging style Mastodon on the Fediverse and also Lemmy+PieFed on the Threadiverse (with newer additions being added e.g. nodeBB and flarum) using the same account rather than dedicated ones for each platform. Personally I feel like the UI is too geared towards the former and ignores what is much more commonly observed in the letter. Plus it follows Ernst's trends to rename every little thing where e.g. downvotes are "reduces", except it's more complicated than that bc downvotes themselves still exist - except they don't, in that they don't affect the sorting (or maybe that was the reduces?) - plus they are now publicly visible, except again they are not (actually "boosts" are, reduces are not, and I forget whether they are or not for up and downvotes).

Even at its peak it never topped 1k monthly active users (according to this site), so compared to Lemmy's ~35k the ~0.7k users of Mbin are practically unnoticeable.

PieFed is the new hot thing, with many features that Lemmy lacks, and some even that Reddit itself does not have. It is still being polished but its pace of development is extremely fast! 😁

Mbin is still going strong. We're just not big.

I've had a couple cases I could've presented there, but it just wasn't worth it to me to take the time to gather the evidence and write out my case. There's good reason I'm neither a lawyer, nor a politician.

2

Have you not blocked the negative instances? Most of what I see are positive posts, or news articles.

20

I haven’t noticed this. And I browse all. If you’re encountering that much toxicity there may be a common ingredient…

Good job taking the bait, then? Is it your first day on here, ffs? Easily triggered dinguses.

Lemmy is just like every other community that has a narratives it agrees with and if you disagree with it even a little you get brigaded. Tankies in particular in my experience

-1
lemmy.ca

you get brigaded

Ah yes, someone is going through the effort of gathering people to downvote you. That makes more sense then it just being individuals disagreeing with you.

You're welcome to think that. I don't really care

-2

Is the irony of you being so toxic being evidence of my point completely lost on you or are you leaning too far into trolling?

-1

Even if its displayed it's not tracked here, and with federation even if it were tracked it'd be useless/out of date.

It's even more meaningless than the other site and every time I see someone talking about it I want to tell them to go back there if internet points mean so much.

I disagree that people should always leave a comment as that is going to both cause more arguments over small details and if there are many downvotes then it is going to basically spam their inbox.

Sometimes it is nice if one of the downvoters explained if it wasn't obvious, but sometimes the comment is just so bad that explaining is worse than a bunch of silent downvotes.

lemmings.world

Nothing was said about requiring it, but I agree that it's a bit annoying when there's downvotes without anyone justifying even a single one of them.

1
feddit.uk

The downvotes also clearly seem to mean different things to different people.

Generally I think they're just used for spam, extreme racism/homophobia etc, cruelty, bullying, or offensive content - but some people are clearly just chucking them around willy-nilly for very little reason.

People having reasons that don't align with yours doesn't make them willy-nilly.

feddit.uk

Sorry I wasn't clear, I mean that some people (I assume) use downvotes just to mean "I don't agree with the thing you said" rather than "this is extremely offensive/cruel/horrifically bigoted/spreading dangerous misinformation" etc - even on something really minor like "I prefer this tv programme to that one" or "I like this foodstuff made in this way".

7

Some people do use it to mean they don't agree with the thing that was said. Heck, I will down vote certain comments because they are a detriment to the conversation even if they aren't misinformation because they might be derailing or ignoring the context of the conversation.

I also down vote some comments for being unnecessarily rude even if I agree with them.

I just have a low bar for what deserves up and down votes, but there is always a reason. Heck, I just upvoted your comment to counter a down vote.

11

If something is extremely offensive/cruel/bigoted/etc, it probably needs to be reported and not just downvoted... Unless it's some community for hateposting, that kind of stuff is almost always straight up against the community rules.

sopuli.xyz

Maybe I'll create a community too, for what I don't know yet.

UPDATE: maybe like a consultancy group for making minimalist website, like the ones you see on Neocities

Bots and bootlickers. Bots and bootlickers everywhere!

It's also became way too fucking political

lemmy.world

I used to post regularly in a variety of spaces about things I was interested in.

If you post a single thing that a mod has a problem with, you get instantly banned from the most empty spaces, like WHY? I post a sfw pic to a comm that is loosely associated because there's no more specific place to post and I get insta banned, why why why?

Not even disrespectful or toxic stuff, literally just posts that don't meet all the criteria of the requirements that aren't even fucking listed unless you go to the comm in a web browser.

it's extremely discouraging, and after only after like a year on this space, I'm already thinking about ditching Lemmy.

Edit: idk who replied, but you're blocked, probably after harrasing me.

-1
sh.itjust.works

You're tagged on my client as toxic. You've got a modlog a mile long on different instances, different comms, different mods, much of it for being uncivil, advocating violence, etc etc. I'll venture out on a limb and say you're the common factor here.

8
lemmy.world

Isn't it great you can just open up a log that lets you delegitimize the concerns of others? Such a lazy and malicious way to think and behave.

Too bad none of that has to do with my post.

None of my posts about my interests were uncivil.

Also, if you can't interact in good faith, I'm just going to block you, too, like the other people who whine at me with invalid arguments.

You clearly responded here because you felt you would get dopamine being malicious twoards a valid target, you didn't come here to have a conversation.

Are you capable of refuting any of my claims without invalid personal attacks to get off?

-5
sh.itjust.works

Could you point at the 'personal attacks' you're claiming I did? My comment was short and entirely factual. Unlike yours right now, I'll point out.

5

Isn't it great you can just open up a log that lets you delegitimize the concerns of others?

You mean isn't it great that there's a log that lets everyone publicly tell when someone is lying about why they were banned or if the mods/admins really are being terrible?

4
lemmy.world

I didn't lie about why I was banned

You want to pretend I don't have valid experiences by looking at irrelevant shit. -_-

If I made this comment on a new account you wouldn't be typing

1

If I made this comment on a new account you wouldn't be typing

I would check the modlog for anyone making posts or comments about their ban--especially brand new accounts--exactly for the reasons I mentioned previously. Either the user whining deserved it or the mods are abusive and that is exactly why the modlog is public.

And other than the bans from the AI comms, all your bans are because you jump straight to insulting everyone when pressed on anything. So yeah, you did plenty.

2

Responding to disrespect with disrespect is a valid response.

When people turn shitty i show them a mirror, and usually we both get banned because they can't take it.

I literally don't know what to tell you.

1

I don’t know if some of them are just new to being mods or if they’re crusty, clenched long-time mods but yeah I’ve been banned for absolutely the stupidest reasons here.

Moderating isn’t really fun, so you have to have a lot of people who want to do it, and Lemmy’s still finding its people.
