i dont mind the ring highlights, the only issue i have with that lens is that the focus ring is very sensitive, like turn it 5 Degree makes the difference between focusing 30m and focusing 500m away, but maybe that is due to my M42 to E-Mount adapter which basically acts like a tiny macro bellow changing the sensor distance 4cm away from where it should be.
The lens has markings on the focus ring, 10m and 200m are 180 Degree away from each other on there, maybe i have to get a smaller adapter to get closer to those numbers....

I think you're very much underestimating your "family photo" camera. There's lots of consumer grade cameras with lens systems available that will blow your mind

Looks like there's a ton of upscaling going on. It's the phone generating what's probably there based on the little information it gets rather than an image of what's actually there. It can be impressive, but there will also be many cases where it looks like an AI-generated image because for the most part it is.
For people without that phone, context why that's silly. The Google Pixel 10 does have an impressive telephoto lens (for a phone) of about 110mm equivalence, although it's nowhere near what we're seeing here.
What's not impressive is its gimmick: anything above 30x is actually AI enhanced up to 100x. The photo you shared likely used that enhanced feature to unblur, like text. You really really wanna piss off some people with this comment, lol.
It's just the built in camera zoom; I was never suggesting it's an alternative to a real camera lens but for a phone the results are still pretty impressive, even if they're achieved with local AI or whatever
I bought a Huawei P30pro in 2016. Now I've got a Samsung S24 basic model. This is garbage in comparison, despite being almost a decade newer. The camera AI isn't bad, and the video quality is great, but the optics are just fucking terrible.
My Huawei was actually useful and the I felt the camera was pretty adequate even for niche long term exposure shots that you'd normally definitely want a tripod and an SLR to take. Okay granted the stabilisation on the S24 is probably better for like hand held low light, but everything else is worse.
The Huawei had an optical 10x zoom (and up to 50x with digital but who cares about digital). Very impressive macro photos, I didn't even need a loop to check the trichomes on my ganja.
Had to sacrifice a soul a little with prolly being on some Chinese spy lists now because of all the Huawei accounts I have but eh, it is what it is.
I was a tiny bit considering maybe getting the Pura 80 Ultra. It's almost got a 10x zoom again. Idk why they went back on it. Too expensive to make? Honestly in the past 10 years not a lot of phones with that sort of zoom.

Actually they did put a real telephoto lens in it, which I think is a real zoom up to 5x? But yes, digital zoom is most things.

Yes, the optics on phones have a very non-linear curve over the decades, we've had great lenses predating Androids & iPhones.
All the dev goes into sensors & postprocessing (while the development of lenses is mostly in miniaturization).
