Noooooo, people could then see the repairability before buying it. We can't have that!!!!

Is it just me, or are transparent cases more brittle than opaque ones? Like more prone to shattering.

22
lemm.ee

Opaque ones have a wider range of materials to choose from. Plastic is pretty unlikely to break, though. Glass is the only other transparent case and that would be brittle (guess which one modern phones use)

29
lemmy.world

Pretty disingenuous comparison to make. Phone screen glass is much more resistant than normal glass and is much more touch sensitive than plastic.

9
lemmy.world

Plenty of phones use plastic or aluminum backings that are wireless charging compatabile

3

You know, it'd be kinda sick if someone made a device that had a colored glass case. Phone glass would probably still be too fragile to make an entire Gameboy or iMac out of, but it might be cool at least as a concept item.

I’m pretty sure the animal they used to make transparent stuff went extinct, like the one they used for the original McRib.

You are correct lmao, they do it from plastic with is made from petrol which was made from dinosaurs.

3

Vast majority of petrol is dead pine trees but a good effort

That phone. My first love had that phone in her bedroom. I walked 20 miles to see her once when I was 14. Man.

She married my brother a decade later haha.

41
lemmy.world

I dodged a bullet.

She developed a drug problem.

One night I was over at their apartment and she was sitting on the dryer crying and screaming at everyone (Xanax).

She launched herself off of the dryer and started beating her face on the floor. She stood up bruised, bloodied, and beaten and said, “look what he done to me. Call 911.”

I said, “Girl, if my brother gets arrested because you beat yourself up, I’m going to give you a reason to call 911, I promise.”

They divorced not long after that, he got custody of their kid and he went on to marry a damn good woman.

Part of me feels like he asked for that chaos.

My niece and I are very close and I love her with all of my heart. So it worked out really.

22
lemmy.world

That's quite a lot. I'm sorry you all jad to go through that. I hope she got help and I'm happy that you all are in better places overall. Thanks for sharing.

She’s actually doing really good these days according to my niece. I appreciate you.

My life is awesome these days. Exhausting, but awesome.

A friend of mine had one in his dorm room. We called it Pavlov because you had to answer when it rang.

Fun fact: Transparent electronics are a thing because prisons require radios, TV, etc to be able to be seen inside and companies later realised they looked cool.

41
Comment105reply

Why did they end up deciding it's not cool or worth doing anymore?

10

The marketing team realized that society isn't cool enough to buy enough of them to reliably profit off it.

4

IMO it's more "thanks prison industrial complex".

The prisoners are just there to satisfy the funding.

7

I thought they'd also test the moulds with clear plastic so it was obvious if there were internal defects due to things like poor flow into part of the mould

Not even transparent. Colorful design, actual individuality, recognizable imagery, etc.

Now, everything have to be like "a letter or two in one color, inside a flat geometric shape in another color", and the most exuberant logo you can find in a well known product is like the firefox icon that just moved from an actually colorful and detailed fox on a clean blue planet like earth to a 3 and a half color based orange circle and blue dot.

31

actual indviduality

I can't even remember how many different shells i had for my Nokia 3310, but damn was it fun to change those around based on the mood of the day!

4

actual individuality

Man if you think buying a product is what makes individuality, you've got bigger problems than a lack of colorful electronics.

They can take my Atomic Purple GBC from my cold dead hands. Make America Trans-Rainbow Again.

I have my transparent purple Gameboy tucked in a safe place. My husband had me get rid of my Nintendo 64 a few years ago, and I'm still not over it.

Who makes someone get rid of a gaming console?

44
lemm.ee

It was because we were moving, donating items we didn't use as often, and I have other gaming consoles. He's a great husband.

4

Blink twice if he's making you say that. Kidding! It was just the wording that made it sound weird. All good!

"X post" kinda also refers to "crosspost". I'd suggest to instead use "Twitter/X post". Otherwise, keep up the great work <3

A few more line breaks and/or paragraphs would have made the transcript a little more legible. And if you'd like me to nitpick, the GBC in question is clear purple.

Beyond that, you're doing us a great service. Keep it up 👍

It'll probably make a comeback when they realize how much they can profit from the nostalgia towards it

I love when technology looked like candy. Now all we get is these boxes

I found a freaking NEWTON in a desk drawer at work last week. With power adapter, but no stylus. Still works though!

12

I had a Newton in college. Loved that thing until too many heavy books were on top of it and the screen cracked.

The Fairphone 3 has a translucent case, and I will never understand why they didn't stick with this design. It's like childhood memories in phone form.

11

But is it available outside of Europe yet?

There's a few Nintendo Switch mods that have done this, you can buy the shells.

I kinda want a smartphone that is made of the same plastic that a gameboy was made of. Something like the iPhone 5C, but with a rougher texture.

Exactly! To be fair, it did show pictures first, but I wasn't paying attention to their names. Then when you actually choose you can only see the names and they both sound kinda like female names. I don't think I was the only one who made that mistake.

2

It was so widespread an issue that they patched the name selection screen to include the picture :-)

2

I had that purple n64 controller with a special transparent edition also of Zelda the Ocarina of time. What a time to be alive it was!

7

I'd put more money out there for my phone to come with a transparent case like this. I think they design everything against what's trending which is white, grey, or black with solid colored LEDs. Either that or go full gamer and put in the rainbow LEDs. 80s/90s had it right with color options.

6

I bought a prison TV from some tweakers. Didn't work. :(

1

Just after that wave my so got an eMac, a toilet shaped jet engine with a screen.

Back in the day it was cool to see the magic inside, today IDK.

sh.itjust.works

Have you not noticed that it seems to be coming back in style? I have a transparent case on my steam deck. I've seen the same mods for other consoles. I've seen transparent battery packs and transparent controllers for sale recently. Also didn't a company just release a transparent phone a couple months ago?

3

Retroid and Ambernic make gaming handhelds with this transparent color case thing.
