They really scared about Lemmy? Being so blatant about this shit... I have learned the following:

  • They do not like subreddits going NSFW it makes them no money. I for one welcome all furries and rule 34 artwork to Reddit.

  • They do not like people promoting Lemmy, any kind of competition gets them trying every tactic they can muster, playing all their cards now.

  • They do not like people deleting or removing data from Reddit. You know what would suck? A GDPR deletion request... That would be a real damn shame. No data to sell then lol

Don't tempt me, lol.

12

That’s how I left Twitter. GDPR request for a full copy of all my content. Then a GDPR request to delete account.

I just want to add that as a European citizen you also have a right to get a copy of all your data, and an explanation how and when this data has been used.

Also, I'm pretty sure that their response "you first have to delete your comments manually" does not comply with EU guidelines.

7

As a European it is an option for me

3
DrYesreply
lemmy.world

Read the update at the bottom. Reddit doesn't seem to want to comply with the requests. I guess you could use a deletion script.

3
Aerreply
lemmy.world

Then they are in breach of GDPR regulations. If they don't comply I could see some serious fines heading their way

13
lemmy.world

Wouldn't they have to have some sort of presence in the EU? If all of their operations are US based (I don't know if they are or not), can the EU really do anything about it?

2

They serve people in the EU so they absolutely have to comply. If you have EU citizens on your website then EU GDPR regulations apply to you.

I have done enough GDPR compliance training to make me want to gouge my own brain out but I guess it came in handy lol

14

Also found this blog post and made the request to Reddit for GDPR data removal. However I removed comments by using the Power delete suite (https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite).

After few hours got email (similar as in the blog post) from reddit and followed by the instructions given in email (basically send as a reddit message confirming account deletion). Few hours passed again and got confirmation email from Reddit "We’ve now flagged your account for irreversible deletion. Please allow some time for this action to complete."

Basically not much effort needed in case you're willing to remove the comments (etc) manually or using scripts, extensions, etc.

However not sure if it would be GDPR compliant for Reddit to leave the comments if the user data is wiped out even if the username is removed from the posts.

3

I think there will be a lot of random actions in the coming days. Reddit is really mad right now and admins are taking random actions that are later overruled because it's bad optics.

Let's be patient with this and not give him a hard time. For those of you who haven't used Sync before, there was a major update a while back which caused strong emotions from many people and caused the developer to take a hiatus. Please be patient and kind and the result will be worth it!

which caused strong emotions from many people and caused the developer to take a hiatus.

This is why we can't have nice things.

12

It was so sad because you could tell he put so much work into it. But like a good dev he listened to feedback and ended up allowing it to be customized to how I liked it originally.

I used it just some months ago and discovered the best thing ever, care to explain the drama?

11
Masterreply
lemmy.world

It had to do with how the cards were presented and how the quick menu and swipe up/down worked. I preferred the previous way but the new way worked just fine. Just took an extra click to use it how I wanted.

It came down to changing how it looked / worked after everyone was already used to how it currently was. People get upset for no good reason sometimes and this was one of those times.

18

Yeah we need to leave that in the past and not repeat a fiasco like that. The community could have handled that much better. I'm just thankful for the support from lj.

I am ALL for this!! I was a sync pro user for years!! Miss that app now that I'm done with reddit.

Sync was Reddit for me.

Reddit dies in my mind when Reddit Sync is no more (I'm gonna patch it with revanced)

If Sync lives on in Lemmy, that's gosh dang amazing

Jerboa is cool and all, but it's no Sync :)

How does the ReVanced patch work? It won't mess with ljdawson at all, right?

2

It wouldn't benefit him in any way but it wouldn't really hurt him either.

Sync and Boost were my favorite Android Reddit clients. I always preferred Apollo and being back on iOS, but they are great in their own right. But I paid for premium for both Sync and Boost for a reason. They were so feature complete and were the closest thing I could get to Apollo on Android.

31
kbin.social

Reddit says r/SyncForLemmy is an unreviewed sub and that I should open it in their app.

27
kbin.social

Lmao what? They can't even stick to their deadline and need to expedite the inconvenience?

13

You're probably right but big boy like Reddit should handle a little competitor talk in its platform.

10
BorkBorkreply

+1 to this, would rather the app supports logging into a fediverse server instead of just lemmy

25
Kichaereply
kbin.social

Lemmy, kbin, Mastodon, Misskey, Pleroma, Friendica... They all use different APIs, and those APIs need to be supported separately by developers if they want their app to be compatible with all of them.

ernest is talking about changing the kbin API to be more in line with lemmy's, which would allow apps made for lemmy to also work with kbin, but they wouldn't, for instance, work with (or possibly even know about) kbin's microblogging feature.

31
elracreply
kbin.social

I'll be honest, I think kbin's microblog feature needs work. It either needs to be integrated into the lemmy style posts somehow or needs something else fine with it. It's pretty confusing how it currently stands.

12

It needs to be in the sidebar of magazines. There's no way to directly integrate it other wise, as they're totally different formats.

But there's a lot of potential in having the fedi microblogging stream at your fingertips. A not insignificant amount of Reddit is screenshots of Twitter posts. Being able to directly quote Mastodon posts to promote them to a thread would be pretty powerful.

But, you know, it's a very young projects. The developer hasn't had the time to integrate things

6

And if I need a lemmy account, how do you manage accounts across the fediverse, you make accounts on each site and they are unrelated?

4
lemmy.world

Would definitely be interested in Sync for Lemmy! I've been switching back and forth from Lemmy's web UI, and the Jerboa app. I like Jerboa, but it has been a bit buggy and in some ways isn't as good as the web UI, and I think the developer of Jerboa is too busy with improving the Lemmy API to focus on Jerboa.

I used Sync for Reddit for a long time, and really liked it. I did eventually move on to Boost for Reddit, but now that I'm moving away from Reddit in general. I'd like to see more options for Lemmy apps.

21

I have had it randomly just close on me occasionally, and the other day it would crash every time I would click a specific link, but that same link worked just fine in the web UI.

As far as what I miss in Jerboa vs web UI. When searching communities there is less info displayed such as the amount of total sub for a community and whether or not I am already subscribed. There are 4 different popup menu controls up top, and I always forget which one as has the thing I'm looking for. If I have to move the cursor in a block of text I have written I find it harder than most other apps to get in the right place with my fat fingers. Though that's also hard on the web UI on mobile too because the text is smaller. Also, there is no fediverse icon that links to the original source of a post outside your instance.

Just now when I tried to respond to you it timed out when sending it, and I had to re-type everything.

Edit: I guess the timeout issue may not have had anything to do with the app, and could have been a server issue.

I've used sync for reddit on android for years, absolutely beside myself with excitement

21

I just discovered it months ago, and it is clearly the best for Android, fuck Reddit, fuck spez and bring it on baby!

13

Awesome news! I used to use Sync daily back when I was on Android, very happy to hear that the users will have some place to go.

20

Or, what if the app had its own instance in the future? Would help with onboarding new users to lemmy for simplicity (of course with the option to sign up elsewhere in app too).

I'd would just like the app to be able to create "Multicommunities" so I can bundle my /c/technology or /c/news communities on different servers in one thread. Yes like multireddits but spread accross the instances :)

11

Hell yes! Sync was my reddit app of choice, and I will for sure migrate to this full time once it is out!

16
lemmy.world

This is very unexpected but I'm so ready to show support! I'll be financially donating and supporting! ljdawson, it at your own pace and I'll be happy with anything you can bring to the community! I was so pleased with Sync for Reddit every step of the way.

14

It's basically a really well polished app to browse the website on Android. It has a lot of features and also very good customization options since it kept adding features over the years.

Having a Lemmy client that good will make it much easier to use on a phone.

12

really excited for this. for me the death of sync is the death of reddit so sync for lemmy means lemmy is my new home.

14
lemmy.ml

Wow. Didn't expect this at all. It's definitely one of my fav Android apps, never mind Reddit Apps. The quality of the Sync app is next level and the level of options it had to tweak the layout and style to suit what you wanted was amazing. Really excited for this!

13

Yes! The customization was perfect for making my experience exactly what I wanted.

1
lemmy.world

Now I just need RIF for lemmy. Multiple fediverse accounts ie lemmy and kbin on one feed?

13
sh.itjust.works

Oh god, the loss of Sync was legitimately the straw that broke reddit's back for me. I would instantly pay Laurence for this

13

Great news! Jerboa is fine for now but it definitely doesn't feel as polished or user-friendly. I'm looking forward to having some more options. I'm following the Artemis development already but I'll be keeping an eye on this for sure.

11

Looking forward to seeing what LJ can do. I've had a great experience using Sync and am excited to see Sync for Lemmy.

10

Amazing news, I'm ready to make the switch to Lemmy/kbin permanent (although it pretty much is and definitely will be after the API changes kick in).

10

Thanks for making the fediverse such an amazing community, everyone. We may have a long way to go before social media without billionaire control is ubiquitous, but I’m confident that this is the right way and it’s just a matter of time before most people realize that.

9

Can’t wait for good Lemmy apps. The web experience has left a lot to be desired. The main feed doesn’t even have side-scrolling turned off. You try to scroll down on your phone and wind up pulling the page sideways.

8

That would be amazing. I loved Sync for reddit and was heartbroken to have to abandon it.

7
lemmy.world

Would it be closed source?

Good app, but with many trackers, and it wouldn't work without Google services one day (anti piracy measure?).

6

I'd presume so based on reddit sync (monitization primarly from ads and iap). Apollo's dev at one point made another app (primarly for killing amp links) that was paid and open sourced it, however he had issues with low effort copycats.

https://github.com/christianselig/Amplosion

The bright side of a closedsource app is in certain cases it can encourage faster development since the dev can work on it part/fulltime (idk how syncs revenue worked).

To be clear the post above is my personal view (I could be completly wrong).

10

Sync is one of the big mobile apps for reddit that is getting shut down on the 30th with reddit's API changes.

15

This is great, i think i used Sync back in the day even bought the pro version, but moved to other open source apps later

3

Sync is a Reddit 3rd party app.

MVP is Minimum Viable Product.

The lead developer for Sync is going to work on a Lemmy app!

12
lemmy.world

Wow cant even veiw that page on the web. Go away reddit.

5

I'm very happy. I had a folder labeled RIP of Android Reddit apps. Now one of them will be resurrected as a lemmy app. I've been using lemmy with the browser on my phone , so this is a wish come true for so many of us.
