This is going to be a game changer. I've been using Sync Pro since 2015 and can't see myself using anything else for mobile browsing. Thanks for the awesome app!

14

That is great news! I look forward to trying it when it is ready. I really enjoyed using Sync and was so sad that reddit ruined their ecosystem.

11

I'm literally getting emotional. For me, Sync was reddit. Been using it for over 11 years. Can't wait to be an early adopter and never let go again.

If you need beta testers familiar with the original Sync or anything, happy to help!

Stureply

Excellent! Sync was my first and only Reddit app. I think I had multiple lifetime subscription s to Sync Pro. Very glad you are continuing with Lemmy! I've been done with Reddit and haven't been back since the day I saw that you were shutting Sync down.

6

Just wanna add my voice to the chorus of people cheering you on. Sync was my app of choice and I'd definitely happily pay for a lemmy version

4

Thankyou, this is excellent news. Syncfor Reddit was one of the slickest apps I've ever had the pleasure of using. So there's no one else I'd rather have working on a Lemmy app!

4

You've made my day! I've been a Sync for Reddit user for over a decade, my Google play review is from 2014!!!

As a thank you and goodbye I recently bought lifetime ultra, I hope that's helping in the development of Sync for Lemmy! 😁

4

As a Pro user since 2013, I can't thank you enough for bringing the awesome experience also to Lemmy!

4

I was a Sync for Reddit user for years. I will absolutely follow you into this.

3

Wanna go full fediverse and bridge the discord to a Matrix room? Might as well get 100% free from corporate overlords.

2

Great news, I was really hoping this would happen. Thank you!

2

We've been using it for sync development for the last few years.

When there's enough to release of course they'll be changelog and posts etc too.

33

Discord is fine, if that's how he wants to disseminate the information. But maybe use a community on Lemmy, for the Lemmy app

8

Yeah using it rn is pretty ass compared to old reddit and 3rd party apps. Good things coming tho.

8

Well yeah, but that's the difference between volunteering and being on a big salary. Hopefully the influx of new users will lead to more code input though, and more donations.

7
feddit.de

The end of Sync is the reason why I will leave Reddit at the end of the month. So nice to see that we eventually might get a new app for Lemmy!

46

It's exciting to see all these apps ramping up development. Honestly, the greatest gift that Reddit gave to the fediverse is sending all their former third party developers here, because that will greatly accelerate development.

37

Same here, I'm so excited!

I'm more than happy to pay for a service I enjoy so I legitimately cannot wait to give him my money.

Here's to new beginnings in the Fediverse!

Likely a game changer. I've been giving Lemmy a try. Jerboa isn't too terrible either.

12
lemmy.world

I agree. Been using Jerboa as well and it's nice and usable enough as a placeholder, but I'll be watching the Sync development. Can't wait!

11
lemmy.world

Jerboa has been nice, besides the weird glitch where it shoots me back to the top of a post when scrolling down. Lol

Otherwise it's pretty good for a FOSS solution!

4
lemmygrad.ml

nah.

Mastodon has great apps and they are FOSS. Jerboa is "better-than-nothing", it is bad.

2

Yeah, tusky for mastodon for example is great, I didn't really get along with jerboa at all.

The auto loading thing on the feed is driving me crazy! I know it's a bug that is being fixed. The sooner the better.

16
gitreply
lemmy.world

It is technically not a bug but it is a feature which was useful when Lwmmy had very few users. It is getting changed anyway tho so it doesn't really matter

3

Oh gotcha. Yeah that makes since if the post frequency is low it wouldn't be noticeable.

3

As a recent lemmy convert from reddit who exclusively used Sync, this made my day. Thanks for the news.

27

Yes it is, been a paid supporter of Sync for quite a while, glad to see this happening.

10

I saw it in the redditsync subreddit already - this is such great news, especially since I'm still struggling to get used to the Lemmy interface. I had bought Sync Pro 7 years ago and it is probably the most heavily used app on my phone.

24
feddit.it

Wow, I've never even used Sync but from the screenshot of the Reddit app on Google Play it's one of those UIs so good that make you want to use it. I'm currently fine with the Lemmy PWA but the more feature-complete Reddit apps that get "ported" to be used with Lemmy the better, especially to ease the transition for new users.

22

Sync is an absolutely wonderful app. I look forward to his contunued dev work

21
lemmy.world

I already bought Sync for Reddit twice. Removing ads from the free version the first time (it was still called Reddit Sync back then) and then again for the 'ad code not even included' pro version earlier this year. Guess I'll be buying Sync a third time.

Or more specifically, Google will be buying it for me with the cash they paid for my data.

21

Or more specifically, Google will be buying it for me with the cash they paid for my data.

Are you talking about this google rewards program that pays you in google play money?

10

Do you know if he has a liberapay.com ? I'd rather that than Patreon

4
lemmy.world

Just created an account then downloaded Jerboa. I am +/- ten minutes old here in Fediverse yet. About to delete my 11 year-old account in Reddit. Thank you u/spez

21

So many good news. Glad these developers are also trying out other options since Reddit has started shitting itself.

19
lemmy.world

Great news! I hope the developers of Relay and Apollo do the same. The more options the better!

19

That's why I came here today! Like a Phoenix rising from Sync for Reddit's ashes Sync for Lemmy will be born! Nice to see you all my fellow converts. Today is my new cake day!

I've really liked using Boost on my Android device. How do they compare?

8

I haven't used Boost in a while, but I love Sync and especially how much the dev cares about the app and the community.

3

I used both but Sync for me always held and edge, I believe it's subjective like most things its down to personal preference.

2
jkure2reply
lemmy.world

I was always a rif guy but I've seen so many posts here about sync, seems like a lot of people loved it. Being about to reply to a comment from my inbox, or at least navigate to where its at in the thread, would be a nice upgrade!

5
lemmy.world

I'm genuinely so excited for this and and the same time hoping boost makes one too. They recently dropped their latest update and it looks beyond pretty with the rounded edge cards and adaptive colours.

17

Never used Sync (I used RiF then slide) but I'll check it out when it's released. The is great news for lemmy and the fediverse. Oh and fuck reddit.

4
lemmy.world

Well, now I want RIF too, completion is good!

In all seriousness this is good to see.

17
lemmy.world

I heard that talklittle (RIF dev) was working on something for tildes, wonder if they're interested in doing so for lemmy! Very exciting :D:D:D

6

Oh, if he makes one for Lemmy, I'd absolutely get the premium version for it on day one! RIF was great to use.

3
lemmy.world

This is great news. If you aren't familiar the dev is very committed, hard working and responsive. Sync was packed with features and customization.

16

Yessss it was my go to. I bought yearly subscriptions for it. If it's an option here, I'll gladly get it as well. :] phenomenal app. You can customize absolutely everything.

4

Great. I hope other devs will follow (dbrady if you're reading this). I hope he ditches reddit's forced naming scheme. Lemmy Sync.

15
lemmy.world

Great news!! I would rather Infinity for Lemmy, but it's a great step in the right direction to make a best community. Althought Infinity is open source. If I were programmer I will do Infinity for Lemmy. But I need time before know how to program.

14

I will pick this up day 1! Been using sync for years and have always come back to it.

13

I moved to Sync when alien blue was bought by reddit, this is such exciting news!! Woo!

12

thats amazing news!

Im enjoying Jebora, but happy to switch to something which throws less errors.

12
lemmy.world

Been Joey for Reddit user for as long as I remember.

I wanna try Sync for Lemmy. This is way to go!

11

My preference was Joey, but before Joey, I was on Sync and loved it. Can't remember why I switched to Joey, but both are great.

5
Cubesreply
lemmy.world

First time I've seen Joey mentioned during this whole debacle, but it's been my choice for as long as I've had an android too

4

I've personally sent the developer an email regarding Joey for Lemmy. Would be neat to have the same ol experience here. :)

2
lemmy.world

This will really legitimize and mainstream the platform!

I am a Boost for Reddit User, but have seen Sync and it is well designed. Jerboa is cool but it is not there yet. The experience the dev from Sync brings to Lemmy will be amazing.

Not asking for features but would be good if kbin is included with it so that user fragmentation is limited. I still don't really understand the difference with Lemmy but it's cool.

11
lemmy.world

My understanding is its all different UIs creating/cataloging content via the ActivityPub standard and it comes down to the different "types" of content being emphasized or focused on. Lemmy focuses on"link aggregation" ala Reddit, Mastodon does "Microblogging" ala Twitter, kbin does and supports both.

3
Cobe98reply
lemmy.world

Thanks for your answer it clears it up.

So theoretically it seems like someone could create an app which "marries" mastodon content with Lemmy.

1

Yes, I haven't tried it myself but my understanding is that kbin is exactly that. What kbin calls a "magazine" maps directly with Lemmy communities/subs and a kbin user can subscribe to a Lemmy sub via the same process they would use to subscribe to a kbin magazine. Kbin microblogging maps directly with Mastodon posts and so a kbin user can follow Mastodon users and their posts the same way they follow fellow kbin user microblogs.

2

Really, I think one of the only reasons kbin hasn't exploded like the others, is because of that split nature. The Mastodon blow up and the Reddit blew up were both instances of people looking for a very direct replacement to the thing they were leaving, rather than something that was, from their perspective at the time, a replacement with extras. Kbin could also use more devs though, I think they just have the one who is doing it on donations alone.

2

I really hope alpha or beta is available soon because the current apps are really lackluster sadly...

10

This is exciting. I loved sync for reddit and I look forward to more app options. Jerboa is good, but competition is better.

10

My favorite Reddit app for several years now. Great news.

10

that's great! Althout I already am enjoying Jerboa, is good to know that we will have more alternatives

9

Was on Sync for 6 years before the API changes. Thought it was gone for good and am glad that's not the case.

9

I will purchase Sync Pro for lemmy when it comes out.

It's been an outstanding app for me on the old site, and I look forward to firing it up again in a much better online environment.

9

I have been struggling with the thought of removing Sync from my phone, purchased premium 9 years ago and it was easily my most used app. So happy ljdawson decided to move the app here, I would pay for premium in a heartbeat on the new app.

8
Chrisreply
lemmy.world

yeah I thought that was kinda funny, but OOP's users are Reddit users so I guess it makes sense. Once they have the MVP out probably it should move to a Lemmy community

6

This is great news. Sync was my favorite Android reddit app. It was the closest to Apollo I could find when I switched from iOS. Hopefully, this app will be as good or better than Sync for reddit.

8
lemmy.world

Does the playstore allow developers to make a page for an app not yet developed? Would be cool when reddit shuts down 3rd party apps to have the sync for reddit app send you to a sign up page for sync for lemmy.

7

There's technically nothing stopping the developer from just releasing the Lemmy app as an update to the current play store app. After all, the Reddit app will be non-functional in a little over a week, but it's not like Google will force him to remove it from the Play store.

4
lemmy.world

guessing this is going to be an Android app and there won't be an iOS variant? regardless, happy to know there's an app coming sooner than later and look forward to being able to easily browse Lemmy on my phone again.

7
lemmy.world

Just fyi, there is an app already, I've been using it. It's called Jerboa. Not as good as Sync, but still very usable and it looks great (the dark version anyway :D).

2
junereply
lemmy.world

Is that available for iOS somewhere? Not seeing it on the App Store so I assumed it was android only.

2

nice. I've personally been more of a Boost user my self so was a bit disappointed to hear the dev was not planning to port or support lemmy which I understand. so far jerboa has been decent but I'll keep an eye out for others.

7
lemmy.world

Yea website is quite unusable on phone, but we'll get there.

6
davidgroreply
lemmy.world

Jerboa has a lot of problems, especially with link and media handling. I actually much prefer just using the chrome "install this website" thing to get a launcher icon. Sync should be much better than either.

13
nadramreply
lemmy.world

That's what I did after 3-4 days of Jerboa. It's not unusable but it needs a lot of polishing. The website / PWA is just better.

7

And this is the kind of thing I liked about the reddit apps that I hope we get here. Personally I find Jerbia to be okay but flawed, installing the website to be a bad enough experience that I nearly gave up on trying it, and am holding my breath for the RIF dev to make a Lemmy is fun or something.

What I reaaly want to see is a few different options to cater to the different tastes people have.

2
ki77erbreply
lemmy.world

I can't find it now but I saw that there was one currently in development. EDIT: actually looks like there are a few. One called Lemur, one called Mlem, and the one I was thinking of is called Artemis.

4
lemmy.world

Awesome thanks! Yeah I see Mlem and Lemmur’s test flights are full. I’d love to check out Artemis.

1

I’m trying one called Memmy that I like so far. I just joined a day or two off TestFlight, so hopefully it’s not full.

It's literally THE best reddit app. If you have an Android, give it a shot before they nuke it. Blows Apollo straight out of the water, it's like miles ahead.

10

Experiences are subjective, so, take this with a grain of salt.

I like Sync better than RIF, Narwhal, Boost, Slide, Bacon Reader, Joey, and the official app.

The customizability in Sync is immense and the UI is the best for a mobile reddit app.

8

It's way better imo, polished af and the dev is pretty active. I was happy to pay for it. Very lightweight compared to RIF and BaconReader. It also has a neat feature where it will Sync (lol) a decent chunk of your frontpage, along with the comments and other stuff. It was really nice in the bad old days when unlimited data was rarer than unicorn milk, since you could load up on your wifi and then not use your 2GB of data/month when you were at work/school, traveling, etc.

2

Give it a shot, there's a free app still on google play for the rest of the month. I found it way better, though I've only used RiF in the very beginning when I was trying to find "my" app, once I got hooked with Sync, there was no going back.

1

Very nice. Been using sync for reddit for a long time. Just uninstalled it last week as no longer have a reddit account.

4

Awesome news! I have been a Sync user for the past literally 10 years

4

Ooo, that's exciting. When I was shortlisting Reddit apps it came down to Sync and Boost, and I went with Boost, but it was a close one. I'd be happy if there's a Sync for Lemmy (that works with Kbin too).

4

Looking forward to seeing all these apps that are being developed for this website !

3

Awesome! I have a couple of issues with Jerboa right now, so I'll probably switch to Sync when it drops.

2

Really excited to see developers move to Lemmy. Let's hope some moderation tools also make the switch.

2
lemmy.world

I’m happy for you Android users! I’m hoping the Apollo dev will develop an app for Lemmy soon 🤞🏾
