I have a friend that I see through five months of the year, but when I look back, he is gone. What is his name?

This is something I thought up earlier today.

I'm not sure if the phrasing is too ambiguous or not. I've been doing cryptic crosswords lately, which include very misleading clues (hint hint).

Give me your answers and any suggestions on phrasing that might make this better, without making it too easy!

Not my guess, but I like J-uly, A-ugust, S-eptember, O-ctober, N-ovember. I can't figure when you look back he is gone in Jason though.

Yeah, this was the part I was most unsure of

My thought process was if you start at December, and go BACKwards, it won't say Jason anymore.

Amigo?

"I have a friend" is the straight definition. "Five months of the year" denotes the number of letters in the word: five. When I look back he is gone is the cryptic segment: ami-go, ami-gone.

My guess anyways, I'm garbage at cryptics... Or straights. Crosswords in general.

It's definitely not a true cryptic, as the answer isn't actually in the puzzle itself, but you are about halfway there.
