When I was a lot younger I bought a US Robotics modem marked as 28.8k that actually connected at 33.6k, man I was so happy about a few k.
I remember those. That few extra k would download those Pirate Bay files pronto quick for back then.
Modems are a big no-no.
Maybe they will give him an acoustically coupled modem connection and make him screetch into it to connect
