I think that's actually the plan. There's been moves to dismantle public education entirely, and once there is no more public education in Oklahoma, then the private schools can hire whoever they want.
Yes, Walters is actively trying to destroy public education. He recently made an order that all schools fund free lunch for all students, using money from bonds, scholarships and other programs - all illegal.. The state turned away federal lunch funding as well. Even if you fired all of the admin staff at most districts, that is an impossible demand - and school budgets were already submitted weeks ago.

As Texas did during educator shortages by lowering the standards to allow the unqualified to “teach”. There was also a push to draw from ex-military and other conservative demographics, but I don’t recollect the exact details. This compromise in quality was furthered by a scandal that had proxies taking the teaching standards tests for the already unqualified. So everything is going according to plan. /jfc

Teaching IS "woke". It requires empathy for the students to present lessons that will actually be absorbed and incorporated into their understanding of the world.
They don't want teachers anymore, they want babysitters who will spout propoganda with no deviation or critical thought

It’s bad. One of the biggest “districts” in the state is Epic Charter Schools, a virtual school/state embezzlement scam (during COVID, the “learning funds” were buying TV’s and Christmas trees). Teachers there teach all subjects, all grades, so the same person teaching your kid Algebra 2 is teaching kindergarteners how to read.
The school only drops you if you don’t log in for 14 days. So a lot of kids will log in once or twice a week, maybe submit a couple of AI generated essays, and then spend the rest of the day playing video games and watching Netflix. These kids are functionally illiterate. I’m not even talking about the fact that our country decided to stop teaching phonics which has fucked up literacy everywhere, but more high schoolers who cannot read a paragraph or write a complete sentence. I taught a sophomore what Christianity was (not like indoctrination, but more that religion existed as a concept.)
Sounds like child abuse. Hope they get the state they're working so hard to build.
It sucks ass for those of us that are trapped here. It’s a battle that cost me my marriage, my mental health, everything. I’ve had so many friends and people I respect tap out. I had hope that if Kamala won there might be federal intervention - perhaps in education and foster care (especially kids who need psychiatric care/have disabilities, Jesus Christ is it an institution dedicated to sacrificing children to Moloch) - but nothing is probably ever going to change.
For anyone who sees this, the podcast (at least that’s how I consumed it) that andros_rex linked here, Sold a Story from American Public Media, is fascinating, and terribly sad, and I very much recommend it. My wife and I binged the entire thing on a trip. I’ve since recommended it to every teacher I know, and many other people.
Moses fuck (sorry had to), but yeah that's real fucking bad. As a taxpayer I'm getting really sick of the fact that teachers aren't being given the resources they need to actually teach and that those resources are being split with charter and sometimes private schools.
Like, I was privately educated, but I want every kid to have the quality of education I got minus the Christian indoctrination. By the time a significant number of kids are entering middle school illiterate we need an independent investigation and report akin to when airplanes crash.
And they only want to make it even worse. How do people in OK go along with this shit?

The majority of people in charge of our education system don't even have kids in the system... School boards are chock full of retired boomers who moved to OK after their kids were fully grown. And then there are the massive amount of religious nuts... Oklahoma does not offer education and hasn't for decades. No one what wants to change that can get elected because of aforementioned boomers and religious zealots.

You certainly don’t need to prove that you know math to teach math.
Any bachelors is enough to get you in a classroom. I worked with physical education teachers teaching physical sciences. We didn’t have curriculum (books were more than ten years out of date) so I was teaching my colleagues how the periodic table worked.
Admittedly, this little order is pretty pointless - teachers are desperate to get out of Oklahoma. I remember driving to work every day seeing a sign I could make about 150% more just driving down to Fort Worth…
