Casually describing herself as a unicorn is aspirational self esteem. Respect

isn't weird how there isn't a word for unicorn rider? maybe its time.

One can't judge a relationship on an image alone but… there's a few redflags on this one. I hope for you they're false alarms.

52

Asked a guy I was on a date with if he liked Lego, and he straight-up laughed in my face and said "No, I'm not 7."

There are no single openly nerdy dudes in my area. Makes me sad.

(well, it actually makes me happy that cool people have successfully escaped this hellhole of a town and are probably living much happier & more fulfilling life)

50

someone should build something like the last starfighter, where after 100 levels of kerbal or whatever it becomes a dating site.

4

That sucks. Meanwhile as a guy, I haven’t found that nerdy girl yet either. But those matches do happen. My coworker is a giant nerd. LEGO, movies, gaming, the works. She just moved in with an equally nerdy guy. She gave him the LEGO LOTR Barad-dur for his birthday laat month and they built it together. He gives her LEGO botanical sets.

Gotta love LEGO couples :D

I don't like Lego, but it is for a horrible reason: I don't have the money and space for it. There are many things I could like, if hobbies didn't intersect with poverty.

In no way does anyone that must be dragged out of the house have "golden retriever energy"

But I'm still happy for them

43

I may not fit all aspects of the meme, but enough of it is on point that it's accurate for her.

22
JackbyDevreply
programming.dev

It's not about you, it's about the meme itself. The meme says she needs to drag her man out for dates but that he has golden retriever energy.

8

I take it to mean they're attentive or... Always there maybe would be the way to describe it.

Similar thing for me, gamer who likes to be home most of the time, so if she needs me to do something I'm rarely ever busy/out.

2

True. I saw this one meirl post about someone whose favorite thing to do is go run errands with someone and everyone was saying a golden retriever wrote it. So I guess I'm a golden retriever.

There's a certain threshold at which it becomes too cringe. Balancing it is the key.

11
lemm.ee

I'm not a fan of judging/shaming others for their hobbies/interests, so it always makes me a bit sad when the defense mechanism is to try to flip the aggression on the other side, trying to shame the "normie" interests.

17
lemmy.zip

Nah, it's the aggressive tone and the GIANT anime picture "edgy" that cringes me a bit, + the "Karen" + the "your man cheats on you", as if us nerds don't cheat (which to be fair, might be a bit true, but there are a lot of exceptions)

15
lemm.ee

Yeah, I'm not disagreeing with you. I am focused on the aggression in particular: trying to flip things around to where the defense is a counterattack. Which could be OK in some instances, but the post itself equates having other interests (like, uh, socializing in person) as cheating.

Elsewhere in this thread OP is condescending towards "sportsball" and "clubbing," which reinforces my point that he's not talking about defending his own hobbies and interests, or even attacking judgy people who should mind their own business, but more interested in attacking others for having hobbies and interests inferior to his own.

In my eyes this is all cringe for those reasons.

why does someone try to shame your wife for something that you do, what kind of fucked up people does your wive interact with

I fucking meant it too. YOU CHERISH THAT WOMAN GODDAMNIT.

now if you'll excuse me I'll be in my BASEMENT. VIBING. until my WIFE GETS HOME.

8

Lol I love being poly. I love watching people freak out when I tell them my love has a date. "OMG what if they leave you???"

I mean... I'm getting laid plenty myself and if that's what they need then I want it for them. That said, I love her so much, I'm pretty comfortable sharing and everyone wins.

You can hear the gears grind 😌

17

This is one of those "a fish trying to understand a horse" situations, but as long as there's consent all around and everyone's happy; GLHF.

20
lemmy.world

I'm glad you guys are happy, but I'd want the foundation for trust to be my dedication to my partner, rather than my lack of ambition to socialize irl. -Ideally, and obviously things are rarely ideal.

17
ani.social

Oh for sure. And we do. I believe her agreement with the meme stems from the fact that my hobbies and interests don't lend themselves to creating cheating opportunities. I mean I'm sure there are Lego Hoes out there, but they aren't looking for my face/lack of funds.

3

I've told my wife that I'm going to strip clubs, because it's one of those bachelor party things that happen (been a while fortunately), and she doesn't bat an eye. I can go to a rave, I can go out to a bar, I can hang out with a group of guys and girls late, and nothing, because she knows I'm coming home. I'd be a little concerned my activities were (or had been, I'm getting oooold) gauged by "cheating opportunities." My wife trusts me implicitly, and it's because I communicate with her.

4

Asking the same question, I have no idea how to meet new people.

8

It's literally a way to test the cheater waters. If someone calls you their work wife/hubby, their dtf and probing you. They just know they shouldn't be because you're fucking married.

5

just shows how severed many people actually are between real life and work life.

4

Isn't work person just a way of saying someone who brings you a coffee when they get one?

What adult cares what another adults spouse does in their own free time? Why is someone’s wife having so many conversations about this? So often they have to make a cringe “meme” to respond to these supposedly frequent conversations? Why is this persons wife straight up attacking other women and saying their spouse is unfaithful as if that is somehow the obvious outcome of thinking Lego is nerdy or whatever the point was

This is made up

Soo… Hollow Knight. I’ve been looking for a Metroidvania game and this popped up. How does it compare to Metroid? From the trailer footage and the reviews it looks more of a super-precise platformer like Celeste with lots of cruel boss fights.

7

i lean more towards the metroid side of the metroidvania genre and i spent around 15 or so hours in hollow knight. it has beautiful design and very deep lore. the map goes on forever. the platforming is tough, but not exceedingly difficult. what made me give up is partially that the combat is too fast and goes on for too long, and partially that it has a corpse run mechanic, which i despise.

at least for a while you can get away with exploring somewhere else when an area seems too daunting, but after a while you hit combat roadblocks which means every failure requires a dash back with half health.

Hollow knight is great, it's one of my favorites. However if you are looking for something to scratch a Metroid itch, I'd suggest looking into Axiom Verge.

Hollow Knight is great. The bosses are tough, but manageable. IIRC, the only really tough platforming section is optional. I've been picking Metroidvanias from this list lately and been pretty happy. He also has some good maps for them. https://demajen.co.uk/tierlist.html

I was recommended it after I finished both Oris but I remember getting super frustrated with the death system which made the whole thing too hardcore for me and my 2.7 minutes of free time. Did I do it wrong?

2

As a pretty old dude, I feel you on the lack of time. That's part of why I don't mind looking at maps. I need to be efficient with my time. You do get items that help with survivability and a fair number of checkpoints. As with any media, you should never feel guilty if you're just not feeling it.

The Ori games were beautiful and quite well done too. Best escape sequences ever.

2
Almaccareply
aussie.zone

Man, I wanted to like the game, but the souls-like trudge from the save point over and over, because I suck and get beaten by bosses easily, drives me up the wall.

1
madkinsreply
lemmy.world

They definitely leaned into the vania side of the genre. If it helps, my approach to bosses is to go in completely defensive at first. That is, don't even try to attack. Learn the moveset, dodge, and eventually you'll start to see where you can squeeze in an attack (or two or three). Don't get greedy and stick to the attack windows that work for you. It can be rewarding, but it's definitely not for everyone.

There is a (something like 50 round) pantheon at the end where you fight every boss/mini-boss in the game plus a unique boss for the final round. It's literally like 45 minutes. I made it to the final round, but I will never finish it. It's just too much for me and I wasn't having fun.

2

I'll beat my head against any wall until it breaks with a boss fight, as long as I can get back in the fight straight away. Otherwise it's just putting annoying simple shit I've already beaten in the way of my goal, and that bores me.

1

Definitely a metroidvania where combat is a major point of the game. Not my favorite in that respect, since my reflexes get worse with each year that passes. Otherwise, it is in the top five of the genre.

Anyhow, I recommend a dark horse for your metroid fix, provided you are into puzzles. I think La-Mulana 1 & 2 are easily the largest and best games in the genre, but they require lots of out-of-the-box thinking, and some of the puzzles are really hardcore. If you are into Indiana Jones, this really scratches that itch.

The games come in freeware and commercial flavors.

4
lemmy.world

It's a beautiful game. One of the best I've played. I just love the atmosphere, art style and music

It's more focused on combat than platforming (tip: you can bounce off some spikes with a well timed downward aerial attack) and the typical metroidvania exploration and backtracking. Except there's a brutal optional platforming section that I haven't had the courage to face yet 😅

The bosses are tough, but not unfair. Some of the optional ones and the (true) final battle can be a bit frustrating but that makes finally succeeding just all the more satisfying.

Given that it it's a couple of years old now it's cheap to buy even when not on sale, so do yourself the favor and give it a try!

2
sh.itjust.works

As someone who's quite a ways through the map, what platforming section are you referring to? (Maybe spoiler tag it)

I’d send them that clip of Will Arnet being corrected on LEGO Masters about the grammatical plural of LEGO. That would be my reply. At least criticize them with proper grammar.

4

I see according to the company the plural form should be Lego. I'll try and change that in how I speak. It's still early for me so I don't think correcting my wife's grammar is a good thing to do.

Kel, get off the Lemmy. You have work to do.
