Okay but... are we gonna make fun of them for this? No, seriously, if they're happy and nobody's being hurt, what does it matter to any of us what they're doing? Besides the sign, I mean.

72

Also, there isn't even a way to tell if this is real. Sure, it could be, but chances are high someone took a picture of a couple that look kind of "white trash" from who knows where, and just used it to create outrage/superiority-circlejerk-bait.

115

That's sort of what I wondered the first time I saw it. There's no real evidence that the caption matches the picture.

16

Average folks don’t take a pic, edit it to make some text space on top and then write the whole story there. If this was like a Twitter/Facebook post with the text in the post caption then it would be more believable.

Absolutely.

It's a shitposting community, I'm sincerely not sure what your point is.

Oh, I thought she was his sister at first.

Gonna be fun for the two sisters raising their kids alone after that dude goes out in a meth lab explosion.

53

Alright I'm gonna try this hereditary math...

So these kids will have the same dad, making them at least half siblings.

Their moms are sisters making them first cousins.

So what are they like 3/4 siblings...?

Notice how he's not looking at her or at the camera. That's because he's already checking out the third sister.

I am poly, so, I have no troubles with this. As long as they keep separate bedroom action, I don't see the issue

Lukewarm take: If they consent, they can do what they want, and share the bedroom if they would want that.

26

I would have an issue with it, personally, because related. But this would be my personal limit

Maybe it’s just me but I feel like an AMA from your perspective as a poly individual would be very interesting, as long as folks were respectful.

I am open to such an AMA. Any place on lemmy where this would work?

1

No, it is a very unhealthy community that lies to outsiders trying to make it sound like the paradise it will never be.

There are so many layers to always have to peel with poly groups.

They are almost always young and it never lasts.

Just do yourself a favour and avoid those thought virus'.

I have zero interest in becoming poly, exploring the idea, etc. it doesn’t appeal to me at all. But from a sociological standpoint, it’s very interesting to me personally to consider the dynamics of those relationships and to understand how they can vary from person to person, group to group.

I don’t have any experience with that community but I promise you that painting with a broad brush like you’re doing is wrong. You don’t know this individual. You’re assuming the worst without ever engaging in conversation with them personally. Unless you do know this person in which case I apologize.

13

I go with normal expectations, and have enough experience to know, this is a good generality.

On an individual level this can change, but the main pattern persists outside of an individual basis

1
lemmy.world

It can be unhealthy. But, it truly depends on the people and their reasons for doing it. You can't just blanket apply statements to people.

This comment brought me to: yes, there should be an AMA!

Srsly, polyamorous relationships are a complex beast. And no, they are not better or worse then other relationship models. They are just different.

6

Says who? Do you have some quantifiable proof, studies, or is this just the same old " i don't like it, baaaaaaad " bullshit?

1

I mean, it's a situation that usually results in drama, but of everyone involved is cool with it, good for them

the implied cheating, the implied having kids you can't afford, not an obviously sound strategy for successful family building leading us to believe they were both accidents instead of planned family creation.

There is literally nothing in the image implying any of that. That’s something that you yourself are implying.

the implied cheating

He got my sister pregnant first, now he's mine

the implied having kids you can’t afford:
they are in front of a trailer home, usually not a sign of economic success leading to having multiple kids you can afford to raise through your own income. Also, grammatical errors.

not an obviously sound strategy for successful family building leading us to believe they were both accidents instead of planned family creation
Do you see many families being created by someone impregnating more than one sister at a time in a family? Are those stable family units creating loving homes for those kids?

Trailer homes can be a very affordable path to homeownership. In rural areas it's not an uncommon choice to find a plot of land and plop a manufactured home on it. They don't have the same kind of staying power or value that a site-built structure would have, but it opens the possibility of getting some land and a home separately, especially if you buy an old one that needs some work and move it (and even moreso if you can do some or all of that work yourself)

Living in a trailer suggests more wealth than renting at least

1

That's interesting information. Now, out of the population of people living in trailers, what percentage are doing it in order to achieve the plan you laid out, and how many are doing it because of abject poverty?

And how many of those are out there impregnating sisters in succession before the first child hasn't even been born yet?

That expression. "Don't worry ladies, there's enough of ol' Skeeter to go 'round."

1

Honestly, I was expecting worse from the post seeing at that pic. Oh well, I guess there aren't that many guys in her town, lol.

4

As soon as I saw the photo, my eye caught “sister” in the text and I assumed the worst. Was pleasantly surprised at how little incest was involved here.

We'll compromise and say Florida panhandle, which is probably generally worse than either :)

5

While we used to call Panama City - LA, for lower Alabama I'd guess this is from Kentucky or Alabama. He's wearing sleeves and sleeves are forbidden on men in the Panhandle

2

We used to call Panama City the "Redneck Riviera", but I grew up in FL. The panhandle is most definitely closer to "Lower Alabama" in hindsight. Funny enough, we did call the other part of north Florida "South Georgia".

2

My sister and I had enough trouble sharing toys, crayons, or the TV remote without it becoming a whole big fight.
