What are your go-to comfort foods?

Work is super stressful right now and I could use some comfort food ideas. Especially since mine tend to involve carbs but I think carbs are making me bloat in a way they didn’t when I was 20. (Aside: getting older sucks.) Never been a fan of ice cream either.

Mine are typically mashed potatoes, or potatoes generally, and plain bean and rice burritos, cheese optional. My husband thinks I’m crazy because it’s all so plain but when I’m sick or stressed and my stomach is upset, that’s what I want.

Collard greens and bacon.

This is a perfect recipe, but I just fry up some bacon instead of using a turkey leg (though I'm sure that would be great too).

Tangerines, sweet, easy to peel, healthy and you dont have to cook.

Law of the jungle. Bad luck for them they’re so delicious.

I normally love Mac N Cheese but since you're wanting to cut carbs my second favorite is jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped in bacon, best on the grill but good in the oven too.

Homemade pasta sauce made from ground beef and pork, in the style of a Bolognese / Pörkölt crossover.

Eggy in a basket. Many may know of it from V For Vendetta, and as much as I'd like to show off: I saw it on there first as well (all those years ago), but my gosh is it satisfying!

Butter one side of thick-sliced bread, use a small glass to cut a hole in the middle, plop some butter into a pan, put the un-buttered side down and crack an egg into the middle, and once it's cooked enough flip it for a bit and then serve.
It takes practise to get the timing, of when to flip, right but once you do it's just buttery and eggy and definitely comforts me well.

Any vegetable i like fried in a pan, deglazed with any liquid (wine, broth, cream, water), some things to thicken the sauce (cheese, starch, flour), with a bit of any seasoning, and this goes on either pasta, rice or couscous. Very bad for the carbs part though, i admit.

Another option i recently found is kidney beans mashed with a fork, with some onions/garlic/green stuff in tiny pieces, maybe a bit of flour/starch and some seasoning (spices, soy sauce), fried in a layer of oil in a pan, makes very good patties that we really enjoy.

Grilled chicken and a bunch of vegetables (shredded carrots, cabbage, pickled onions, etc) on fresh made naan smeared with hummus. I like some Nandos Garlic sauce on it as well

How do you make your naan bread? I've been making a quick and easy one with yogurt, flour and baking soda, and they're good, but not quite as good as 'real' ones.

3

I believe the root of the word means 'bread' etymologically. But even in Hindi, नान means a flatbread that looks very like what English speakers would mean by naan, a flat bread, ideally baked in a tandoor.

Mince and tatties? Whereabouts in Scotland are you from, pal?

2

I grew up in the Borders, so lowlander! Now living in England and occassionally ordering meat pies and tattie scones through the post!

Poutine, there's this place near me that sells 'em with a lot of smoked meat on it. Or grilled cheese + tomato soup if I've got the ingredients.

Canada? As if my American ass wasn’t envious enough of you Canadians!

2

This is such a weird food item. I never heard of it until I visited Iran

My partner's go to is Chicken and Biscut crackers with Canned Cheese

I like the dollar cheeseburgers from McDonald's that aren't $1 anymore.

Canned Cheese

That's a thing? I didn't know that was a thing. What's it taste like?

4

Cheezwhiz. It's cheese but not cheese in all the wrong but oh so right ways.

4
lemmy.world

It tastes closest to American cheese/craft singles, but it's more of a liquid than a solid.

3

I chop up a potato and throw it in a bowl with water and microwave it for 10 min. Then, I fry them in a pan with either butter or olive oil. When they're almost done, I crack open 2 eggs on top and mix it all together.

Top with ketchup. So good.

Fresh bread! The warm soft fluffy kind that I can gobble down in seconds. Ice cream is nice, but my lactose intolerance hates it lmfao

I'm in the USA and my local grocer makes bagettues throughout the day. It's amazing to get a warm loaf fresh out of the oven at 7pm.

2

I know the local grocery store only makes bread in the mornings, so fresh fluffy bread at night is on me to make, alas!

1

Doubt I’ll be much help here if you’re worried about carbs. My main comfort food is pasta. Piles of pasta. I like just about any sauce or topping.

Only advice I’ve got is to think back to your childhood and see if you can think of anything that might scratch a nostalgia itch. That usually helps me too.

Comfort food is supposed to be simple and comforting. Nobody's comfort food is osso buco on a bed of garlic and chive orzo with white wine braised pearl onions.

4

Ha you might not know it from some of these replies! Might bust out some Campbell’s.

1

It's not necessarily simple. One of my main comfort foods is Indian food that I have no idea how to make from scratch

1

California rolls, shrimp avocado rolls, salmon avocado rolls, miso soup

Or

Chipotle burrito bowl with chicken, barbacoa, brown rice, black beans, pinto beans, extra fresh tomato salsa, extra red sauce, extra cheese, lettuce, and queso

3

Ah I forgot about Japanese food. Hell yeah. You nailed it with the rolls and miso. Also Mexican food

1

Their barbacoa is severely underrated. No idea why everyone wants the chicken so bad, it's dry as fuck.

Basic microwaved quesadilla. Two flour tortillas, sown sprinkle cheese inside…. Amount dependent on my feelings for the day. Some hot sauce to dip, or salsa. Completely shit, takes a minute-thirty to prepare and heat, and makes me happy 100% of the time.

3

Flour tortillas and Kraft singles. That was the extent of my mom's cooking

3

I get a cooked chicken from the grocery store and a bunch of dinner rolls. Then I eat the rolls with butter and big bites of chicken.

2
lemmy.world

I do this every week but with a fresh baguette ... Don't cook on grocery day.

2

This would be a disaster for me: I have to eat before going to the grocery, otherwise it’s insane what I get

2

Peanut butter. Just peanut butter. Normally I’ll have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch but when I’m stressed I might forget the jelly and bread

It’s probably a step up that it’s no longer all carbs or all sweets. It’s also used to be Kraft Mac and cheese, but I can no longer go back from real Mac and cheese

2

I totally agree with you. I am all about those bean burritos. French fries. I will often enjoy mac n cheese, buldak, pizza, biryani, and chicken tikka masala. Not at the same time, though.

2

A ground beef & refried bean burrito smothered in cheese and genuine New Mexican red chile sauce.

2

Any sort of shrimp makes me happy. Sounds expensive, but 2lbs. is cheaper than a fast food meal around here.

Easy? Bagel or English muffins with cheese, any sort, and powedered pepper and green onion tops.

2
sopuli.xyz

Braised lamb shank with red wine and carrots, plus mashed potatoes or egg noodles if you’re OK with some carbs.

2

Plain comfort food would usually be something like home made chicken fried rice. That bland, carb, hug with a bit of umami to lift it.

That or any nostalgic food. Stuff my mum used to cook when we were kids (but not some of the stuff we had because it was the 70s!). Like fried egg and chips. We were pretty poor at that stage but two eggs and one large potato per kid was affordable. Cheap and tasty. But my mum was a pretty great cook so she also used to do curries and goulash and paprikash and fish pie and steak and kidney pudding... any these, if cooked just the way she cooked them, are comforting to me.

2

They’re already dead and processed, would be an insult to not consume them.
