PewDiePie: I installed Linux (so should you)

PewDiePie made a video on why he installed Linux and explained why everyone should do it too. Due to his number of followers, this might be the year of the Linux Desktop? Hooray?

Uh oh, brace for the hordes of people complaining that some anticheat game doesn't work on Linux and therefore the whole thing sucks.

Maybe he doesn't play any Multiplayer games (anymore) so why should he care. But yeah I also missed that part since some big games could make problems like Fortnite or GTA V MP?

I honestly don't care about PewDiePie, I care more about his audience. And his audience is bound to expect everything to work if PewDiePie advocates for it, even if he explicitly tells them to temper their expectations. That's just how gamers are.

5

? I've been very consistent in not overselling linux, and calling out that overselling whenever I see it. I've been 100% Linux for 15+ years, and I really want people to use it (more users = more likely for vendors to support it). However, if you oversell it, especially to gamers who have very little patience for things not working properly, it's going to backfire.

So yeah, I'm grateful that someone as popular as PewDiePie is recommending it, I'm just a bit worried about the public perception once people realize there are caveats. It's fantastic if you're flexible about what games you play, it's not if you really need that specific MP game to work.

Grandma is totally the right market here since it does basic computing stuff really well. Gamers however, as a broad group, aren't, especially gamers interested in streamers, which are often the more social type (read: more likely to be interested in anti-cheat MP games).

I don't know about you, but my grandma isn't using her PC to play Fortnite.

I wonder what he did to optimise his Firefox startup time.

I did not see this coming.

Haven't watched pewdiepie in years, glad to see he's still entertaining.

Isn't this guy Nazi adjacent?

Tasteless, immature, edgelord, yes. Actual fascist/Nazi, I don't think so. I've never really watched his content. And I will say this. From what I've seen in recent years, he seems to have matured a bit.

I haven't found him tastless in a long while. He seems to just be vibing living his own life at this point.

That's generally my understanding as well at this point. That and he's had a child. And seems to be making a somewhat serious attempt at parenting. And perhaps starting to look at a lot of this stuff through the eyes of a father

Having a kid/kids really does change a man. Or person. In many ways.

Yes it absolutely can. Here's hoping he continues down that path.

8

Same. He really does seem a lot more chill nowadays since I last checked him out. Never was a follower but you can clearly see a difference between a single video like 5-10 years ago and this now.

The bar for matured for someone with his history should be higher, especially in todays world.

Like making a video speaking against alt right edgelords and Nazis.

13

I didn't say he was mature. I said he's matured a little bit. I absolutely agree he should probably make some decent public apologies for the stupid s*** he's done / said. But by the same token. When people do make progress no matter how small it is we can acknowledge it.

12

Used the n-word on stream, promoted alt-right content, and some other racist shit.... Google it for details.

Quite frankly, Nazi-adjacent is bad enough, especially when he's made no effort to own up to the problems he's caused. It seems like he very deliberately tries to skirt the line of plausible deniability.

11

I agree. That said he has shown some small signs of maturing. Hopefully someday he will do that. I agree it's needed. I have a feeling as a young parent he's going to learn all about imitatable acts. And hopefully he will understand and think better about them.

He did a video shouting out 10 lesser known youtube channels that he liked and it turned out one guy who did movie reviews or something had some antisemetic social media posts.

1

Ok so it was anime reviews not movies. Nothing in that holds any factual information different to what i said, it just frames it aggressively.

The second was part of a video showing off fiverr. The guys he paid made a business of writing whatever outrageous stuff people wanted on a sign and posing with it. He had them write something outrageous on a sign and pose with it.

The mans uploaded thousands of videos as the most watched youtube channel on the planet. Any mistake hes made is easy carrion for vultures to farm outrage off of.

The important thing is that hes apologized and redacted any content and statements that could be construed as racism or bigotry, and has clearly stated repeatedly that thats not what he believes.

In the current political climate when the twitch is openly antisemetic and news networks (fox) are calling for genocide, i wouldnt take that for granted.

2

I'm so happy for him. He seems so excited about Linux and has done much more customization than I have XD

He's said and done a lot of antisemitic things and spread Nazi ideology.

Much like Mr Beast and other top YouTubers, he only cares about himself and has used controversies of other YouTubers to try to take the spotlight off the fucked up things he's done.

At least for me its not important what kind of person he is.
I quite like that a very influental person in the gaming sphere promotes linux gaming.
Because more users means more content and support

sh.itjust.works

They didn't say they're okay with their behavior, they said they appreciate promoting Linux, because more people using Linux is a good thing for all Linux users.

I fail to see how welcoming Nazis like him benefits the Linux community

-11
sh.itjust.works

Two things:

  • who's welcoming him? I've only seen excitement about what his video might mean for Linux adoption. I don't think anyone is saying he should be a spokesman or anything.
  • I don't see evidence of him being a Nazi, I only see evidence of him being an immature streamer; then again, I've probably only watched a total of like 2 min of his content because I don't like his style

I don't care about him enough to look further, I only care that he has a sizeable audience and is saying positive things about Linux. That's exciting, because that could push Linux adoption a bit higher. That's literally the extent of how much I care about him. I'm also worried we could get net negative press if people have trouble with it, but either way it's exciting.

The same goes for literally any influential person talking about Linux. I don't like LTT, but I was excited about the handful of Linux videos they apparently made. Maybe there are others, idk, I don't watch most of the popular streamers.

didn't know making Nazi jokes and saying the n word as a grown man is immature. curious how easily white men get infantilized so they can avoid accountability

-9

It certainly is when not saying such things seriously. Pushing the boundaries of what's acceptable is very common in gamer circles and is incredibly immature.

And age has little to do with maturity, I've seen plenty of 40+ people saying very immature things for attention.
