which you'll eventually need because you'll stop going to the doctor for anything less that being literally seconds away from death.

46

Will that even be enough in Greenland, unless you live around Nuuk?

This makes a good point - a country like Greenland without strong government and a strong security net would simply become uninhabitable for normal people.

It seems as though they can't understand why anyone wouldn't want to be American, which is kinda nutty.

Yeah, you'd have to pay me a lot more to even consider it, $10000 seems laughably low.

Yeah. Someone else suggested it might cover your first ambulance ride. I'm thinking maybe your first year health insurance?

Edit - it was just a wild guess, but here's a badly formatted table copied from an article in Forbes:

Age of member Average monthly costs

  • Age 21 $445
  • Age 27 $467
  • Age 30 $505
  • Age 40 $569
  • Age 50 $795
  • Age 60 $1,208

So, for my age, my guess was almost exactly right!

16

Oh, they know this is junk. It's just noise to split focus away from what they're really doing.

Fun fact denmark already sends more money than that so by accepting this deal they not only would they become american but also loose gdp. No matter how you look at it its a lose lose for greenland lol

Just FYI, loose and lose have different meanings. Kinda like desert and dessert.

12

Yes it was a typo. Sometimes when im tired in the morning or night my spelling gets funky. I have spelt english words in hungarian and hungarian words on english before, i think its because im bilingual.

17

Yeah Giuliani could probably use some of the money Trump owes him so he can pay his own legal fees.

10k*

*minus dealer prep, handling fees, transaction fees, documentation fees, implementation fees, conveyance and escrow fees, and miscellaneous charges and fees.

God this guy isn't gonna stop slobbing Putin's knob is he?

Just chill, Donnie. The markets can smell your fear.

39

Imagine his surprise should he ever go there and see very little trees and grass

7

But then all of the people in Greenland won’t work! Remember when the United States gave us all in the midst of the COVID pandemic and none of us returned to our jobs and now all live on yachts? This would be even worse!

32

All other idiocy aside, this number is just so fucking offensive. 10k, really? That's it?

It's 65774 DKK. With 40k/mo salary average in Denmark (so like 25 after taxes),this is a few months worth of money. Ok, maybe salaries are lower because whole Greenland is in the middle of nowhere, but it's also not some war-torn African country - people don't live on five bucks a month

5

Ok, maybe salaries are lower because whole Greenland is in the middle of nowhere, [...]

Having visited Iceland, the cost of living is higher on islands with limited agriculture and high cost of imports.

Someone in a cross post said: a million dollars would be insulting. Ten k is beyond insulting

It is funny, people always seem to default to the lowest number of a big number they can think of when thinking of a big number.

"I want a hundred"

"I want a thousand"

"I want ten thousand"

"I want a hundred thousand"

"I want a million"

I realize that for Trump and the US ten thousand dollars is like throwing pennies at a poor person assuming they will be overwhelmed by seeing "ten thousand".

Same in movies, unless a guy is supposed to be super smart, they will only refer to money as:

  • 100
  • 500
  • 1000
  • 5000
  • 10000
  • 50000
  • 100000
  • 500000
  • 1000000
  • 5000000

They very seldom go, "I want 370000" unless there is a reason in the plot, never to just get more money.

I think it's for the opposite reason shops sell you stuff for 9.99 / 99 / 995 etc but you're right it does make it sound like a random number. I noticed myself people are less likely to hassle if it looks like a specific number (like 85 instead of 100 or 22 instead of 25)

3

That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works.

14

How about giving that to everybody who voted against you, for having to put up with four more years of your shit?

10

In this new era, these crooks will float an idead on the webs, then measure the response with AI fucking crawlers. I should just switch off wifi or something.

He’s reading the intelligence of the people in Greenland. Thankfully they are not dumb

Greenland already receives around 600 milion Euro PER YEAR from the Danish Government. Trump wants to give them less, and as a one time payment.

Greenland, as part of Denmark has free state funded education, with special grants for Greenlanders that want to attend education in Denmark itself. They have free healthcare and access to some of the best social safety nets in the world.

As Danish citizens they also have access to the EU free travel zone which allows them to visit any EU country without requiring a visa or even a passport.

There are more benefits that I'm forgetting for sure.

Unless the Trump administration offers to match all of the above then Greenlanders would take a losing deal. Sure, almost everyone has their price, but this deal is like offering you 100 bucks for me to come live in your house forever afterwards, ask you for money if you wanna send your kids to school or you want to go to the doctor.

45

Yep, that $10000 will be gone with the first doctor's visit.

Okay, maybe Greenland should take the US. We can be their red white and blue land. It's a pretty strategic location.

7

Yeah, the 10k per person would be about half a billion dollars one time. So it makes no sense to get less than that only one time.

2
lemm.ee

The leprechauns.

Who would I be talking about besides Greenland? In case you didn't know, they are in the process of becoming an independent country.

-1

Thank you for the clarification. I didn’t know. I wasn’t sure if you meant Greenland wanting to leave Denmark, or Greenlanders wanting to leave Greenland…

But desiring Independence whole nother ball of wax than wishing to be a vassal to different nation.

4

Greenland is not a part of the Schengen Area, and a passport is required for travel to most of the EU, except travel to Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden where any photo ID is acceptable, if perhaps not entirely practical.

1

Yes, it is. The people of Greenland have repeatedly told him "hell no!" and expecting them to abandon their principles for the 2027 price of a dozen eggs in the US is selling them short, pun intended.

33
lemm.ee

Lol, yes it is. Greenland only has a pop a little over 55k people. Meaning that trump is offering a little over 500m dollars for an island who's gdp is well over 3 billion dollars a year.

Not only is he being incredibly stupid, he's being super cheap about it at the same time.

30

Might be hoping for some Brexit type stupidity where enough people heard somewhere that they get 10k if they vote yes.

2
fishfriedireply
discuss.tchncs.de

Thats true but $10.000 is quite little compated to how they benefit from the current government. Free healthcare, free education just to name two.

17

You have to factor in the cost of living under a fascist autocracy too, where you can get kidnapped and sent to a secret prison for life because you didn't respect the leader enough, even though the leader is a corrupt moron. Which is a pretty damn high cost, and $10,000 doesn't even begin to balance it out.

18
lemmy.world

Nah, it's the stupidest idea, it's a massive waste of my tax money for something that no American actually wants or gives a shit about. Why can't we just leave people alone, why is the only other option war?
