That Blops2 summary implies the new cold war began because of something China did.

In this timeline it's 100% the US

184
lemmy.world

Or the Blops2 summary is American propaganda and purposefully avoids mentioning why China did what they did

call of duty is 100% propaganda

I haven't played those games, but is the game aware of this, like Fallout 1? Or do you mean that the game itself is actual propaganda?

18

This I knew, but you need(ed) the hardware for movies. I am not actually surprised the military funds CoD though. There was an FPS specifically designed for recruitment as well.

2

Yes, more specifically anything produced using Military tech and video as referenced is in itself subject to strict Military Censor protocols.

1

TikTok was openly promoting Trump as well, and TikTok is owned and operated in Beijing.

2
lemmy.world

But the Chinese helped elect the US Fascist who did the thing...

2

TikTok and China, including Xi Jinping personally, were openly endorsing him and promoting him online. They celebrated his victory, there were even talks of Xi Jinping attending the Inauguration.

Dear gods. Without rare earth metals the US could regress technologically. We'd likely revert to cathode ray tubes and other post WW2 tech. That is until fusion is sustainable and then we get fight over energy for some reason. Next thing you know it's October 23, 2077...

Rare earth metals aren’t even rare though. They are just not found in concentrated form like gold. And metallurgists in the past had a hard time isolating the metals that’s why they called them rare.

It’s just that China can mine them cheaply since the Chinese government doesn’t care about labor rights and the environment. Europe and Australia has rare earth metal deposits.

Taalnazireply

Europe and Australia do, but honestly, as a European, I'd rather trade with China than the US right now. Even though both are shit.

32
aussie.zone

Why are we always having to choose the lesser of 2 evils! Where's the fkn good option!!!

17
lemmy.world

The USA is just on track to become what China already is, though.

4
Taalnazireply
lemmy.world

The difference is that the US is speedrunning nazism right now, and also tries to be an asshole far outside its borders, especially specifically towards us.

China is also an asshole (cf. the whole Taiwan thing & the South East Asian Sea) thing, but its arms don't reach as far as the US... yet.

1

See just take the racial and nationalistic supremacy dictatorship's hostile military actions and then add already successfully annexing neighbors and viola you have China.

1
Maggotyreply
lemmy.world

The US has deposits too. Some of the ones our military equipment needs most are found in Zinc mines and we let our refinery capability for them lapse in the 1990's. So all we actually need to do is get a refinery built.

7
Agent641reply
lemmy.world

Yep just build a refinery over the Easter long weekend

5

It won't take a super long time either once they plonk the "national security needs" tag on it to make it immune to impact assessments and such.

3
Auxreply

And that's why all labour rights should be dropped!

1

Some wastelander is gonna find my bottle cap collection and get as excited as a pirate finding a buried chest full of gold dabloons. If they don't immediately go to New Vegas and visit Fisto then I collected them all for nothing

26

In the cyberpunk universe the tech exists that we could all still be alive, I mean look at Rogue, she didn't age a day in 57 years.

But I'm pretty certain I'll be pushing daises by the time the bombs drop

3

Ooh I hope tubes come back. I need cheaper and better quality tubes for my guitar amp collection damn it!

A related tangent: Ghost Recon had a plot about Russia invading Georgia in 2008. That game was from 2001.

5
lemm.ee

Yeah but Ghost Recon: Future Soldier has US soldiers protecting its universe's version of Putin from a coup. Its set in 2024.

It released in 2012.

Sometimes they get it very wrong.

1
hopesdeadreply

Or they got it very accurate? 🤷

That sounds like what could happen.

EDIT: I’m not saying we have to do exactly that. It just seems like the way Trump supports Putin feels like he would do this.

besides robotic weaponry, we are literally in this timeline

Auxreply
feddit.uk

Yeah, people often forget that human like robots are shit in general. A flying drone is a lot more efficient at delivering a grenade than a running mech.

22

I get a little uncanny valley twinge comparing the T2 intro to the demo videos of the current state of ambulatory humanoid machines.

It's only a little twinge, thankfully. Bipedal humanoid mech is kinda silly, IMHO.

Carcinisation is the way for terrestrial war-bots.

Turns out biological restrictions on things like wheels limit evolution

4

That works because the entire body is a wheel though, I'm talking about multiple wheels

2
Auxreply

Robots have a very limited scope of their functionality compared to animals. Legs are good when you have to perform loads of different tasks to survive: chase, hide, climb, tear flesh apart, etc. A robot which only needs to deliver a grenade to an enemy doesn't need to do anything like that.

4

The battery tech is getting pretty good where exoskeleton can be quite small but still very useful. Being able to run a lot without losing fighting capabilities for a soldier is still an incredible advantage.

2

Yeah, we already have all those things apart from futuristic technology. But the boffins promise it's less than 5 years away now.

3
feddit.uk

Does this mean that 8 year old was right about my mum?

Out of rare earth metals? Just start a war with cyber robots! They are built from wood and love.

If they hadn't noticed the rest of the world isn't really looking up to the current USA either.

18

But some of them will fold. And china can’t be sure who will

8

China has been slowly restricting access to these materials for a long time, at least years if not decades. They have a large enough population and therefor workforce to refine it into products themselves and sell the results for high profits.

Of course as a net result diplomacy breaks down with loss of trade for incentive, but their aggressive militaristic actions and election interference show they don't give a fuck about that.

Took me a minute to decipher that too. But looking it up, the US president in the game mentioned above is a woman. So they are saying “in the game the president is a woman, in real life he (Trump) is just a bitch.”
