Voyager released to the App Store!

It's taken a lot of hard work and I'm excited to announce that Voyager is now on the Apple App Store!

If you have time, download the app and consider leaving a review! This helps Voyager gain visibility and legitimacy.

Get the App!

Can I continue to use the PWA?

Of course! The PWA is self-hostable, hackable, and receives updates quicker. However, it doesn't have access to certain native APIs that the native app takes advantage of.

Can I continue to use the Test Flight beta?

Yes, but I recommend switching to the App Store release if you aren't actively involved in testing. It's a more stable release :)

Enjoy! 💙

I am so in love with this. What an amazing gift this app is in a world of corporations and data harvesting. If ever there’s a project that deserves our huge support, it’s this one.

Best lemmy app, period. So sleek, so smooth.

I was hoping the "scroll freeze after swipe back" bug would've been fixed by this...

Is this an apple only problem¿? I don't face this on android

Yep it's a Safari (and its webview) bug. This is a quirk that will haunt this app and I don't think there's much that can be done from developer's side other than porting this app to a native library.

The safari bug is actually resolved in the native app for iOS. It only ignores gestures if you swipe quickly while the view is still transitioning, but it no longer latches which is the safari bug.

The problem is that Ionic view transitions are too slow on swipe back (vs native views) this is an Ionic bug though that can be resolved in a future version of Ionic. Basically the view transitions too slowly and you try to swipe right at the tail end of the animation and this initial gesture is ignored.

But it should no longer "freeze" until you stop all gestures, this is resolved in the native app.

Oh nice.

It's still driving me crazy though. I'll wait patiently for that to get fixed...

Congrats! I’ve been using the PWA for a few weeks and I’ve been convinced to do it for my next project.

For me the best feature of the native app is that your browser's history isn't full of vger.app entries.

4

Yup I'm on Android, the PWA creates an entry on Chrome's history for everything you do.

How can I get the old icon back? I’m not a fan of the new one.

App icon switching is planned for a future update. Maybe the original will be included, but I can’t say.

Been waiting for this app to be released on iOS and it DOES NOT disappoint! Hands down the best way to view Lemmy.

If it’s already this good on its first release I can’t wait to see what the future updates will bring!

As a former Apollo user, this app also brings me back to the good times of using it before it was shutdown.

Fantastic work devs!

Posting from the app, looking great! Thank you, @aeharding, you’re doing amazing work here. Migrating to Lemmy from the other place has been such a breeze with this app to smooth the way.

9

Looks good to me. What I still miss from Apollo is a swipe right to get „back“ to a post I just swiped left from. Something like the browser forward button.

8

I’m just a layman in terms of app development, but have a basic understanding of the monumental amount of work that has gone into this app, so I would like to congratulate everyone, or singular person, who has made my viewing habits as streamlined as they are.

I look forward to your success, and wish you all the praise, financial, emotional and learning support you could wish for.

6

Awesome! Been waiting for this to switch from Memmy, as I loved the PWA except for the limitations. Thanks for your hard work!

6

I've been using the Android version, and it's awesome, y'all IOS buddies are in for a treat.

6

I don't really use any apple devices but I'm really happy for you guys. Congrats!

5

Awesome news! Congratulations aeharding and team! 🎉🥳

Downloaded and reviewed. :)

5

Already downloaded! Didn’t realize how much I missed the haptics

Commenting directly from the new app!!

Thank you! It looks and works wonderfully!

4

Woah boi do I feel at home ! It looks so much like Apollo, I love it ! It’s so nice, everything is where it should be. I’m loving it so far, thank you so much

4

Thank you for all your work into this app! Currently replying from the iOS app 😁

Would it be possible to change accounts while staying on a post? In case I browse with one account and want to comment from a different one? Or some setting to autoswitch accounts when I open a post from a different instance which I also have an account on?

3
Dalinarreply
lemmy.nz

Is that so you can have conversations with yourself?

4

😁 Rather because it’s sometimes more useful to comment with a „local“ account instead of the standard one I browse with. It’s a little complicated with the whole federated approach.

3

This is odd. I can upvote, scroll, sort, login … all of it with Memmy. None of that works the first time with Voyager. I keep getting errors saying it can’t login, can’t vote and so on. I have to try it twice for it to work.

That's very strange, I haven't heard any reports similar to that. I'll keep an eye out though. Sorry for the problems.

7

I was finally able to sign in with Lemmy.world account. Will look forward to progress with app and will happily donate once moderator tools are added. Hopefully community banner display can also be incorporated into the app. 🙏🏻 Kudos for work so far!

2

I’m having the same issue. Commenting here while using Memmy. I can login with lemm.ee account but not Lemmy.world account.

1

Commenting from lemm.ee account from Memmy. Still getting errors when I try to sign into Voyager with Lemmy.world account.

Thanks for your efforts with this app! It’s down to this, Memmy or MLem for me probably. For what it is worth, I like how Mlem allows for community banners to be displayed in an about or sidebar section. Liftoff! Has similar integration. Voyager is quite polished but hoping it can add some of the above. Will continue to compare to the aforementioned other apps. Cheers!

Is it just me or is the animation when collapsing comments is very choppy?

2
randintreply
lemm.ee

Not just you. Also very choppy for me, both on the PWA and on the app from F-Droid.

2

Not exactly glad to hear it, but relieved that it isn't a device issue. All the people talking about how fluid it is....what? It's a good app but it's not fluid at ALL, heck even Jerboa is like 10x more fluid for me.

Any chance you'll include the option to select which browser to use as the default rendered? Sync let's me choose that currently, and it's one of my main reasons for using that over Voyager, because I much prefer the Voyager UI (and ad-free experience).

Thanks for responding to me, yes that is exactly what I'm looking for. It's this supported on Android too?

Hmmm, the link on that GitHub issue seems to be going nowhere (at least, it doesn't load for me). Any instructions on how I can set the default browser behaviour?

1

Ah okay, that makes sense. I'll keep checking in on the project then until that's ready. I don't want to use my system's default browser due to corporate filtering, so whenever this feature is implemented I'm ditching Sync :-)

However, it doesn't have access to certain native APIs that the native app takes advantage of.

How much extra programming overhead does adding code to use these native APIs add to you¿?

2

What are these benefits?

Posted from the native app :)

1

No benefits. I was asking the main dev how much extra work he has to do to maintain the native versions

1
lemmy.world

the android one is on github, no? will it be released on google play eventually?

1

Hey, would it not be possible to switch to our PWA? Or is the code completely different?

1

Will you implement in the Future the "Plus button" to create posts without actually visiting one community?

1
lemmy.works

Cannot report a bug, iPad store version. Was asked which instance I'm on with login and password, so 100% fail. Basically this app does not know what federation is. Sad, it was a great app.

Sorry, I'm confused by your comment. You should be able to login to custom lemmy instances just fine.

5

Ahh I think they have just clicked the drop down for the “connected to instance” when using anonymous instance rather than the login button in top right
