Remember when Obama was asked if he could run for a third, and he said he couldn't because it's not allowed. Imagine a President who respects the law, the Constitution, and the will of the people via Congress. Irony is that it was Republicans who put in place the term limits, so Trump is even against his party's previous mandate.

51

I also remember republicans freaking out about how Obama was going to run for a third term and declare himself king even though there was absolutely no indication that anyone thought that was a good idea. He was just popular and they couldn’t handle it.

8

I mean Obama did drone strike an American citizen without due process but respecting some laws is better than none.

Is he wrong though? We let this happen. It's our problem. Our founding fathers had a spine. Our generation is weak. No I'm not excusing myself.

I’m sorry that it’s not easy for me to stare down losing my life and maybe worse. Sorry for being here and looking for other support l. Sorry

2

Hey, I’m not downvoting you or blaming you anymore than myself. I don’t have the answers on what exactly should be done. But history has shown us time and time again that people are unfortunately probably going to have to die before anything gets better. It’s just the way it works. Monsters don’t just give up their power.

It’s so easy to be an armchair revolutionist, much harder to stare down losing everything.

They have been, you just aren’t hearing about it because they don’t want you to hear about it. People are fucking pissed.

7

Yeah I know people are pissed. So I guess I’m watching for when we mount a resistance. I would be a shot leader for it, and I must admit, I’m afraid, I’m afraid of what it will mean, but still somewhat ready to join.

2

When the rest of us pacifist lefties, and i am also including you the person I'm replying to, buys a gun. So far, the Republicans overwhelmingly own more guns and train more often and would wipe us all out from the comfort of their diabetic mobility scooters.

I thought it was the magas who were revolting.

Oh, you mean like revolution.

3

Naw, you were clear. I was just making a joke.

English is a silly language.

1

He will probably suspend the constitution soon. He will at least make a serious effort to have the entire thing suspended due to "far left radical insurgency" or too many "illegal aliens disrupting the political process".

Idk why he's talking about a 3rd term. I don't think anyone expects him to live out this one. He is very old. 4 years of being a fascist dictator might as well be a decade off of his lifespan. There's no way he'd be physically capable of running again. Being the most vile human being alive is actually very bad for your physical health.

43
lemm.ee

Why suspend it when you can just ignore it?

Look a fascism lite in Russia or Turkey -- they still pretend to have democracy and rule of law -- that's the power of pretending.

23

There also comes a point where they don't have to hide anymore. They're doing Nazi salutes on television. They're pardoning white supremacist neo Nazis. They're already there. Why pretend when they can just deny that such a thing exists or should exist in the first place? Fascists will love it, and that's where his core supporters are anyway.

8

They're just going to put his name on the ballot and run it through his hand picked judges. If we just go along with it, Elon will use Star Link to clean up the votes so he wins. Then the scotus will allow because he can't get impeached and the Senate won't convict.

Only solution is Luigi.

34
lemm.ee

He will run and the supreme court wont shit about it by citing some bullshit legal ambiguity. Democrats in the house will whine and then say they can't do anything about it while waving small little signs to show their indifference.

30
Daggityreply

Easy, the founding fathers didn't say anything about term limits.

6
ripcordreply

Have they actually tried arguing that constitutional amendments are unconstitutional?

1
lemm.ee

Republicans are already ignoring constitutional amendments like separation of church and state with teachers having to teach the holy bible in Oklahoma. The right doesn't even need to rule something as unconstitutial the supreme court simply ignores them

The argument made for Trump being able to run for a 3rd term is that he didn't have two consecutive terms. The rule of law in this country is a joke. Nobody is held accountable for any crimes, if he runs nobody is going to stop him.

OK I was asking in context of the founding fathers comment though

lemm.ee

The constitution is an living document. The founding fathers created it as something that changes with the times. As long as the law is amended to the constitution it can't be ruiled unconstitutional because it IS a part of the constitution. It takes a 2/3rds majority to amend the constitution and the president has to sign off on it though I think the pres can be sidestepped with a super majority vote. Amendments can be removed too with enough votes. If congress and the president decided that our government wanted turn into a monarchy then they would need to amend a monarchy into the constitution and they'd have to vote on removing term limits from the constitution. If congress decided that every one has a right to a free Nintendo switch 2 then that could be amenended too and then every american would receive a Nintendo switch. Anything can be amended!

Federal law isn't part of the constitution and the supreme courts can rule any law unconstitutional of it violates any of the amenents. Abortion was never amended and thats why states can get away with outlawing abortion while other states can allow it.

This system only works if the checks and balances are actually working and the laws are enforced. The founding fathers knew the system would break down one day and thats why we have the second amendment.

This time they'll hook an AI trained on his posts and the gibbering of monkeys to Twitter and nobody will be able to tell the difference.

3

So what’s being passed through the house that he keeps trying to distract us from? Is this to make us look away from social security while they carve it up? He always makes these stupid outrageous statements when he is trying to distract from something sinister happening elsewhere.

11
lemm.ee

I wonder where the republicans that take the constitution so litterally are right now? If I understand right, there's a difference between full on MAGA-cultists and actual replublicans. It's clear the democrats are worth fuck-all at this point so I'm keen to see if there are republicans with integrety. Or you know, the democrats getting their shit together.

Trump getting elected after this term will result in JD Vance becoming president, I'm almost completely sure of that.

Technically, he could run as VP with the explicit plan to have the actual president step down as soon as they're in.

But I don't know if Trump would even be down for that. He just wants to run for a third term full stop.

3
Podunkreply
lemmy.world

There is a part of the constitution that prohibits someone that has completed 2 terms as president from being vp afterwards.

8
lemm.ee

My understanding is because of the way its worded that it could be generously interpreted by SCOTUS to favor Trump running as VP. I can't remember the specifics but I remember reading such.

0

The 12th amendment prohibits anyone disqualified from running for POTUS from being VP. It’s quite clear.
