I realized tonight sh.itjust.works is the best lemmy instance

I've slowly become familiar with lemmy and learned the things like blahajj is an ally of trans but hides downvotes and kbin shows how you vote to others etcetc. i don't even know what hexbear is but hear it's ideologically wonky.

Lots of Lemmy instances basically have some decent aspects, but then something about them is a total dealbreaker.

I've started looking at moderation histories when coming across content removed by moderators and am now able to distinguish instances where ideologies not aligned with their admins get censored. I first noticed it when checking why certain posts were removed on Lemmy.ml and had to research lemmy.ml to understand they purposely are a socialist communist niche community so they basically remove content they don't want. I had a run in with a drama on Lemmy.world and curiously checked their mod log to realize that they actually quite often remove comments that don't match their ideology (along with finding controversial historical actions of .world).

So after all this getting to know instances involved in lemmy, you know which one has no weird dealbreaker attributes that I know of? I just realized tonight which one it is...

sh.itjust.works

So cheers everyone.

Admins and Mods here you are doing great. Community, you are doing great too. grats on being the best instance

Understatement of the year LMAO

lemmy.ml to understand they purposely are a socialist communist niche community so they basically remove content they don't want.

Uh nah, they're tankies, they're authoritarian communists essentially

lemmy.ml

uh I just picked lemmy.ml pretty randomly when I moved from Reddit, though I specifically picked it over lemmygrad because I'd heard lemmygrad was full of tankies. personally, I'm a left libertarian. I'm not auth at all.

I think you might be overestimating how much a user's home lemmy indicates their ideology.

lemmy.world

.ml is a tankie instance not because of the bulk of the users, I do not judge any user, .ml or otherwise, until I have seen them or seen evidence of them commenting Tankie ideology or defending it.

.ml is deemed a tankie instance because the admins and many of the mods not only are hardcore tankies themselves but also enforce the ideology throughout their instance via admin/mod action

.ml is the most subtle of the Tankie Triad and because they host some official Lemmy support comms often get treated with "kid gloves" by the other instances and don't get defed'd from like the rest of the tankie triad does (Hexbear and Lemmygrad)

Checkout [email protected] if you want to see more

Actually, because the .ml admins block that comm so you can't see it, you'll need to use this link through another instance: https://lemmy.world/c/[email protected]

12

No, it's definitely full of tankies. I got banned for calling someone out for saying, "You have to give Donald Trump credit for brokering peace in Israel" about a week or so ago (I just followed-up with them yesterday after Israel, shockingly, shattered that ceasefire, and I've been ignored).

Maybe not all of the mods/admins, but enough that someone will ban you for going against the Russian narrative.

5

There's heavy handed moderation in .ml communities that people hold big grudges about, and that's mostly about it.

State socialists, if you like. It's an oxymoron, but some still seem to choose it.

They're "Free slaves"

Doublethink is required to actually digest their rhetoric.

4

theyโ€™re authoritarian communists essentially

With an utterly broken sense of what is or isn't communism or socialism. So many of them still going to bat for Russia, which has objectively not been socialist since the wall fell, and arguably long before that.

All votes are public on lemmy, no matter what instance. Itโ€™s how federation works.

57
Quetzalcutlassreply
lemmy.world

There's at least one server that uses dummy accounts for vote federation to keep the voters anonymous.

3
Quetzalcutlassreply
lemmy.world

Well, damn. I remember a comment where someone mentioned they'd modified their server fork to create a dummy account for each poster and use that when federating votes, and also said they planned to submit a pull request with the feature to the main repository, but I couldn't find anything when I looked for it. I've searched through my upvoted and saved comments as well as the issues and pull requests of several fediverse platforms but had zero luck.

I remember it coming up in response to either this drama or when the Lemmy devs asked if votes should be fully public last year, but the related threads had nothing either. Maybe I hallucinated the whole thing!

2

It might have been on .ml and gotten deleted maybe? Idk, but thank you for looking, it does sound like a good feature.

lemmy.dbzer0.com

I'm still new but enjoying dbzer0. I heard of it because someone said that lemmy.world blocks its pirate community, so of course I had to sign up there immediately.

26

I started on .world when I first learned about Lemmy, but recently found dbzer0 and realized I finally found my people.

6
sh.itjust.works

I chose it for the clever URL not knowing much when I first came to lemmy. Happy circumstance that it ended up being a solid choice. :)

Cheers to the mods and admins for making this a great place.

Love it too, but I don't understand why they didn't go with shit.just.works, unless of course just.works was already taken (wouldn't be surprised). Or maybe it's actually supposed to be "sh, it just works"?

4
sh.itjust.works

It is my understanding of history that The_Dude had the domain itjust.works, and when choosing a subdomain for the Lemmy instance, some absolute genius suggested "sh".

11
angrystegoreply

I think it does have several ways of being read, deliberately so. I saw someone explaining it as some kind of programmer in-joke as well.

Maybe. Sh is an unpopular uncommonly used shell, though many scripts are made sh compatible for wide compatibility

1
psudreply
aussie.zone

Yes. Bash is descended from sh, and will run sh scripts, but it isn't sh

2
stringerereply
sh.itjust.works

Oh. Thank you, I just thought the sh was the file extension used for bash, did not realize it was the precursor.

1
psudreply

Linux uses "magic numbers" to determine file types, extensions are just for people who like them and MS Windows

For shell scripts the magic number is '#!' and is always followed by the path to the shell that interprets the script type (eg the first line might be '#!/bin/bash')

2

I might be misremembering but I think I read somewhere that they already had the itjust.works domain.

2
lemmy.ca

The Canadian lemmy instance lemmy.ca is pretty cool. (Though sh.itjust.works is also Canadian)

23

Here is where I started, here my I be burried. Love the ethos, love the mods, love the stability! (Great job @[email protected]).

Also, SJWBot still makes me laugh every time I see it.

18

I don't think it would be fair to credit sh.it just.works as the only instance with no dealbreaker, but it has served me very well ever since the reddit api changes.

17

The instance admin commented on rules a while back: "Number one rule is to not make us ban you". And I think that tends to curate a userbase that are able to behave themselves without needing a defined set of rules to live by. Rules are one thing, but if you need common sense spelled out for you, you're probably not the kind of user I need/want around anyway.

15

sopuli.xyz and feddit.org are also pretty decent IMO.

14

Db0 is pretty fucking dope ngl. Their piracy megathread alone brings them over the top. The lack of censorship is just icing on the cake.

13

lol exactly why i came here but juste used the vibe -o-meter to know it was here that the internet should just be a stupid forum for stupid posts for stupid people stupid is interchangeable with funny

10

I came here since Reddit killed third party apps, so I don't even remember how I chose my instance anymore. I guess someone recommended sh.itjust.works somewhere? Tbh I don't know a lot of the differences between instances (except some well known ones like tankie .ml), but I have no complaints about this instance I'm on. Although I'm not really super active, in all fairness.

8

I don't mind sh.itjust.works, but it has a distinct younger bias. Lemmy in general lacks a lot of diverse depth, but that is a byproduct of size.

For someone a little older than most on sh.itjust.works, the tendency towards more shallow and emotional interactions is not the best for me in social isolation from physical disability. It is hard to discern the age, intentions, and depth of people based on a few sentences here and there.

If Beehaw had remained federated with most, that is where I am most aligned. I stay on LW because of mod communities and the Alexandrite front end is my favorite. I have accounts on most instances and have tried using some of them for stretches. My main thing is that I honestly try to always show the best intentions and act in good faith. If I see moderators or Admin in my interactions something is fundamentally wrong. The average person, like this, should never see admin or mods actions. From that perspective, I have no issues with LW. I don't always agree with Admin and I know at least one doesn't agree with me, but that kind of diversity is fine with me. I see the good and the bad of capitalism and tankies. In both cases I am anti authoritarian. I know I don't have all the answers but I am damn sure that neither does anyone else.

::: spoiler I don't think there is a perfect instance because we are all a spectrum of differences, but I'm glad you have a perfect home for you Allo.

i think the image was used to illustrate the point of being on a spectrum of differences and as a proper shit post follow up to a well thought out and carefully worded comment. Saw a pretty good tedtalk on this recently :24 is where it gets into it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

I've found Blahaj to be a great instance, though if you don't like queer shit then you best stay away.

I tried Shitjustworks, Beehaw and Blahaj out for a few weeks and have found myself gravitating toward Blahaj.

3
lemmy.dbzer0.com

Why would you care about people seeing how you vote? Have courage in your convictions

7

as a shit user i think shit is the best instance for no reason in particular at all

6
lemmy.world

So how does that lemmy work? do I need a whole nother login for that? Some people mention lemm.ee would i need a new sign in for that as well?

6
lemmy.dbzer0.com

This post was made on that instance. Federation is why you see it and can comment on it. You have access to see all of their posts and comments and can interact unless your instance .world in this case gets defederated from their instance. You do not need any new logins to participate with their instance. It will show up in your feed on w.e app you prefer to use. (Same goes for lemm.ee)

Defederation is essentially a block made of an entire instance. Sometimes it is done to prevent future issues, and sometimes it is done because idiological differences. An example of the first is threads being built into the fedeverse. It has so many users that it would effectively nudge out all smaller instances and eventually start putting ads back in and w.e they want to make money and do whatever they choose to manipulate the users. So many instances have pre-set their instances to not allow federation with threads when it eventually connects. The second example was ideology, which the user mentioned .hexbear. They are a group of people who are often misrepresented but have no problems with commenting death to America over and over again. Some of them are trolls, some are not, but in the end many instances defederated from them because they didn't want to deal with all the issues and people bitching all the time. World is the largest instance by a good amount last I checked. (Probably to large ratio wise). You shouldn't have issues there. When someone posts a comment on dbzero, it'll show in your stuff.

Some other things instances vary on is, upvotes, downvotes, no votes, and perpetual scrolling. (Though many apps have that choice as well). Some people worry about mental impacts of perpetual scrolling so they limit it. Some instances don't show the votes, and some only show the upvotes as they believe it helps promote discussion as opposed to just downvoting something you don't like and moving on. This also makes situations where someone may not realize 184 people downvotes and 1 person upvoted and since they are new to a topic, may not be able to tell it may not be based on truth or agree with public opinion or what not.

The one thing people SHOULD realize. No matter what your instance shows you, upvotes, downvotes and by who ARE recorded and sent by Lemmy through federation as part of how it works. So when you upvotes a comment, there are people out there that know YOUR user name in specific upvotes that comment. They can see a list of every vote. This also goes for downvotes. Most every instance has turned this view off for users so people don't get upset at someone and follows them around nagging them and what not. That said. The data still exists and is transferred through federation otherwise it cannot keep track of up/down votes, because otherwise it would just go up or down every time you hit the button it has to say "Freddy.world" has already voted.

So now if you don't understand how scary that is yet. Just note that bad actors can spin up an instance, federate and know the username who up/downvoted say a post about Trump being a dictator. If you are not using a VPN at all times, your IP address is going to get caught up being tied to your account. So they have that account connected to your phone (and government will know the home address)

Have fun out there, but it's always nice to understand how things work. (Upvoted a nude, I'm sure someone can create a database and log all of it fairly easily.).

thank you, i had a feeling there was some privacy issues with the openness of the network. I always thought reddit would do good to have multiple profiles allowed to a main account, so if you wanted to shitpost, or if you wanted to wankbank it, or discuss Friedman economics you would have profile to do that with. Of course big reddit would admin all that, but it would reduce in theory all the new accounts constantly being made alongside the bot accounts and reduce some of the throw away nature of accounts that accrue to much data over time thru the nature of commenting

5
lemmy.dbzer0.com

Yeah, if they did the multiple profile thing, in the end all of the IP addresses would still link the profiles back to the same user (or household) on Reddit's end, which we know they sell user data like many companies do. Many sites don't intentionally grab the data but rather have to have the data for functionality. (Hope I'm not over explaining something you already know, just information in case people aren't aware.). Essentially every machine while connected to the Internet is tied to an IP address. If I go to a webpage, say Google I am outwardly requesting the data from Google.com (or w.e the address is which also translates to an IP address). The data from that page is sent back from their website to my IP. When that is done it is logged as computers verify the packets are all sent/received for any errors. So say you search for a washer/dryer or pants. It knows what you wanted, and where it was sending that information. Now someone who sells those products wants to know who is looking for those products, so they will pay Google (or other companies) for that information and also want Google to push advertisements for their website who sells pants or home appliances that delivers or is local to your area. They know where you are locally because your IP is tied back to your City/Internet Service Provider. So marketing wise, that's already a good enough geographical understanding of "they've got a Sears near them, send them our adverts" or no they don't have a Sears near them, don't waste our advertising budget on them specifically. (Maybe shipping costs are high to your area)

It's all happening fluidly all the time in the background

2

on top of that, amazon and google this past week said that their devices would now listen all the time by default and send that data to hq. Now if you are just discussing something it will be added to your advertising profiles. I bet a bunch of cars and other benign objects are doing similar things.

gpt and low cost cameras now give companies the ability to monitor you 365 while on their property if they want to. Discussing something in line at the grocery store, llm note take takes that, time stamps it with your order and ties it to you profile. Doing a drug deal at your local circle K and dont by anything, cameras catch you license plate and suddenly you are getting amazon ads for the types of rubber bands your customers prefer you use on their 8balls

2

You can communicate with either using your existing account as we are doing now.
If you prefer an instance's rules or vibes you can choose to make one your home by making an account there, but otherwise we're all federated and you can engage from whichever.

8
psudreply

I have lemm.ee as my backup for when aussie.zone is down

For use like that you do need another login, just go to https://lemm.ee/ and make a login

There are browser scripts to copy your subscriptions from one instance login to another

5
Psythikreply

You only need one login to post on any instance, but I would recommend having multiple logins just in case the instance you picked (lemmy.world) shuts down for any reason. Your comment/post history is linked to your instance of choice.

A commonly mentioned comparison for how instances work is email. Let's say that you have a Gmail account, for example. You can email people with a Yahoo email address, but you can only access your inbox by going to Gmail. Different instances basically function like how different email providers do. They have their own design and rules to follow, but anyone can communicate anyone.

5

No you don't need another login. It's just that communities on that instance are more chill. You can find the same communities across different instances but the ones on certain instances will ban you for almost nothing.

Edit: forgot to mention you can only create a community of your own on the instance where your account is located.

5

I agree, as it stands sh.itjust.works has one of the best instances in my opinion. At least for users who are new to Lemmy since it has the easiest signup and is also very stable.

4

I think some guy on reddit told me this was the best Canadian instance. Glad I'm here, they were right.

4

To be honest I don't like their name so I've been avoiding it just for that reason

1

Lol I got banned from their NCD instance for saying the US wouldn't allow Ukraine to join NATO.

Bunch of reddit migrant cowards
