More people are still in the lurking stage of their lemmy evolution.

That’s why I’m being a lil chatty boi here. Pretend I said something clever

What I also noticed is that most posts are fresh and the comments are like 5m old, even though I'm not sorting by new. We're not used to that coming from reddit

Me too! Now, instead of just thinking dumb questions, I actually ask them.

I dunno I still hit the problem of going to comment totally original and witty coment 64 on a post o ly for someone to beat me to it by 5 mins

I think I comment quite a lot but rarely post. does that count as lurking?

5

I comment a little bit but I feel like actively making posts takes time I don't really have room ght now.

Hopefully as the mobile apps come more together it lowers the barrier of entry for new users. I know as an iOS user I’m still not sold on any one app vs another because each have their own bugs to work out. At least I’m happy with Sync on my android tablet

The best part is adding that first comment and seeing it explode after.

(Explode being a very very relative term in this case 😜)

It wasn’t a first (or even early) comment, I’m just encouraging participation on undiscovered posts. It’s super rewarding to ask a simple question and have engaging conversation unfold around you on a post that might otherwise die.

They don’t get hot if we don’t comment!

I was more of a lurker for much of my time on Reddit but I find myself commenting and upvoting a lot more here because I genuinely want to contribute. I should probably just sack up and start actively posting on the few small communities I'd like to see grow tbh

8

I should also post but there’s a lot more involved in that. You post your own photos, best strip the metadata. Probably from anything you make originally actually.

I don’t mind that people don’t contribute top-level content, as long as they engage with it when it comes up. That encourages the people who do want to create, and gives those on the fence more of comfort doing so, because they aren’t alone.

If it’s a small community, it’s well worth the metadata strip, though!

I like to sort by new and give the poster a boost when I can, the comments really do make all the difference right now. I’m not a content creator though.. but I’m sure the engagement gives them validation as well!

I totally agree, just being facetious. I would've normally lurked before joining Lemmy but it's fun to be a part of it!

Ten favorites on Mastodon?! Woah! That's a hit toot!

4

It's fun to actually have interaction and visibility here. On Reddit my comments were usually permanently buried at the bottom by the time I saw a post.

The ones I hate are "AITA" posts that are uploaded by a Reddit/Lemmy bot... Like, who tf are we supposed to reply to?

I just ban any of the content reposting bots.

9

Yeah, now AITA become a wasteland that no one post or comment anymore because it's flooded with bots content.

Luckily someone can create another AITA in another instance and we can still interact with it.

I am still sad that Facebook buried this. I know it's still there, but it used to be much more prominent.

Ugh, I have cringy memories from myself as a kid in the earlier days of Facebook, overusing that poke feature because I was a dumb, extremely awkward kid who had no idea how to socialize so I mostly just annoyed people. Had such a bad "lol im so raaaandum" phase.
