I'm a moderator, and I was abused

I waited so long to come forward and tell my story because I didn't think anyone would believe me. But now I want people to know what happened to me, because if knowing what happened to me could prevent it happening to them, then I want them to know.

If a banned user asks for where a rule is written and you ignore it multiple times you’re probably either a troll or an asshole. Also the sidebar of that community has no rules…

35

Right? This mod just banned me and I asked for rules and he told me he would unban "when I learned" ... learn what? There's no rules.

Old mate said it best. Ironic shitposting is still shitposting.

The user in question was a bit aggressive, but you did not clarify at all and ignored their question about the abbreviations policy.

Check out the opinions here https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/38104278

Apparently, you should ban yourself too

The afore linked community is now on our naughty list of communities frequented by naughty taker-backers (I will not use the culturally offensive word because that's not who we are here, even though I've seen the other community use it), who extend invitations to converse and then rescind them.

Reading from 9:09:12 AM till the end, I can notice that you did not address the main concern and instead focused on your name.

A link to the policy could have ended all of this peacefully.

I understand the whole thing, but you need to have transparency in mod actions.

User meant the instance name "SDF", which was an unnecessary comment but given the circumstances, understandable

11

I've managed dig up a copy abbreviation policy (please let me know if there's a newer version of this)

5.03 Abbreviations

  • The following words cannot be used in abbreviations, and their use in such a manner is a ban-able offence: "New", "York", "Times". In accordance with the Board's principles, these words are sacrosanct and to shorten them is heresy.
  • Taximeter cabriolet can be shortened to taxi

Is it really that hard to provide this poster with a reference to the policy against abbreviations you state exists? Also, what kind of policy is that? You do understand you would have to ban anyone using "you'd, can't, I'm, etc." since these are all abbreviations?

Please explain yourself as this seems to be a very concerning way to moderate an instance as big as yours

edit: Contractions are abbreviations! I was wrong!

Sorry, I don't use google. But I do know what an acronym is. It's when you only take the initial letters of a phrase. Like SDF. That's an acronym. Acronyms are also abbreviations, because they shorten the phrase.

Hope this helps.

TheDoozerreply
lemmy.world

Not sure how they responded, but that's technically not an acronym, as it would need to be sounded out as if a word (e.g. NASA or laser, but not CIA or UTI).

SDF would be an initialism, but not an acronym. Just for your awareness.

2
lemmy.world

Says who? If you contract word aren't you also abbreviating them? This goes to show that policies like this (should this exist in the first place, of course) makes absolutely no sense at all

English grammar. You can abbreviate a wooden log with a chainsaw, but you can't abbreviate a word grammatically by cutting off the beginning of it.

2
lemmy.world

Abbreviate is a synonym of shorten so your creating a difference where no difference stands. At least I, as a non English speaker, don't see the difference so either the rule is badly written (since I can't understand it) or makes no sense at all. In both cases the rule and the mod applying it are not working towards a betterment of the instance.

So why is this being implemented?

So why is this being implemented?

I have no idea about that. I was personally talking about something else completely, which I was wrong about and have apologized for, but since the other person removed the context, it's a little confusing now.

Like I said in a different comment, I too am banned from r/news. Fortunately I can still see the posts. I just can't engage with them.

This story is a clusterfuck and it's not helpful in developing a better environment here on lemmy.

I'm sorry for your ban, I hope lemmy will federate a better news instance and that we could have meaningful discussions about actual topics and not the satire about a power hungry mod and his community.

Best of luck brother, keep lemmy great!!

I actually found it in the other linked thread, but thanks!

1

I know this is an issue you've been going through for a long time, and I understand how difficult it is to finally come forward.

I hope you can find peace and strength to carry on. Unfortunately you've violated the handwriting policy and will be banned for 14 days.

I am seriously struggling to have this year?

I read "sh" as an abbreviation for 'shit head'. Not sure if thay was intended but grammatically it fits perfectly.
"shh" doesn't fit.

Anyway, this user is clearly being a sh and deserves the ban simply for their reaction. Never in my life have i attempted to seek information in such a hostile way even after being banned. lol

6

Thank you for your bravery. I am so sorry this happened to you, though I was really hoping to at least learn what the abbreviation means.

I too was banned from /r/news, but it was completely my own fault for not reading the 'reliable sources policy'.

1

i cant believe you would make light of such abuse op is clearly hurting and youre over here acting like this isnt a big deal this isnt a joke

If your culture is to ban users for non-existing rules to troll them, you can stick it somewhere

10
.Donutsreply
lemmy.world

And how does this justify getting banned for a non existent rule?

6

Or ![email protected] which is the actually appropriate place to post something serious

The banned user has posted to that community already.

This is something that should have never federated, to be honest

I'm not sure if you mean this post or sdf as a whole, but there's already people talking about defederating from sdf because of bad actors

For all I know, this is an admission of guilt.

The moderator that banned them hasn't replied to anything, anywhere, except make this facetious post.

4
lemm.ee

Why are you the only person that's claiming the entire instance is satire though? No one else has said anything like that, especially in the power tripping post.

3
lemmy.world

this is not true jawa and i met over a skype call to discuss this dishonesty and jawa assured me that it was not a lie but rather an active effort to spread disinformation to sow discord and encourage the broader lemmy community to defederate from sdf

2

oh i know this one

if i asked jawa what you would say if i asked you which door leads to freedom would jawa lie to me

2

You're in almost every comment here defending the mod for being a shitty mod. "its satire! It's a joke! It's not a joke, its a performance!"

Ok

If this is really how this instance is run I think I was initially correct in blocking it.

I don't know, j, that sounds like a slippery slope.
