What's the story with Mailbox.org 2FA?

I'm looking to finally get my spouse and I both onto a non-G email service with a custom domain. Having storage and calendars to replace Drive is the deal-maker with the spouse.

I've been using Proton as my alt email for years, but all the new crypto bells and whistles just seems sus from a business management perspective. I get it, they're Swiss, but still.

But looking at Mailbox.org, their 2FA situation seems bonkers. That's the dealbreaker for me.

All I really need is IMAP, webmail, and actual security without feeling like I'm going to be doing this all again in 5 years to get out from under another crypto bro.

Wow. They offer that? Do you know how it works?

i use TOTP with mailbox.org. definitely weird but i rarely log into the web interface. i just use imap and webdav clients.

Sure, but I also have to consider my spouse and their habits, which are anchored to a shiny Google experience. If it was just me, it wouldn't be a big deal.

Same. I use the website to create new alias and thats all.

I went through the same transition a few weeks ago. Fuck that Proton CEO.

I ended up with Migadu for email and selfhosting Baikal for contacts and calendars. No complaints so far.

Does baikal work for reminders and support caldav/carddav? Currently I'm using a VPS running nextcloud for contacts, calendar, and tasks/reminders but I have an old Dell server collecting dust that I was going to start selfhosting on.

I was going to just selfhost Nextcloud, but I don't use Nextcloud for cloud storage, just contacts, calendar, and reminders. Soooo baikal might be a better option for me

Yes it does both calDAV and cardDAV!

I was on the same path as you, I didn't like the nextcloud bloat. Came across baikal and it just worked perfectly from the start. I use it both on desktop and android, no issues with sync. As for the reminders, I guess they are baked into the events, because the events work nicely on my phone. Definitely worth a try I'd say!

Thank you for replying a month later! I'll have to give baikal a go, it sounds very interesting

I never tried, or even thought it an option. I'm trying to self host as much as possible, except for email.

I am in exactly the same position as you. Let me know how you get on with the transition - it might save me some teething problems later!

Just turn on the mailbox beta in the account settings and you can get regular TOTP when logging into the webui

You reached the end
