My partner just got me to "fix" her chromebook
I built her a desktop in 2019, has always had Linux on it.
She has had a chromebook for a couple of years, but this weekend she finally got annoyed enough to ask me to fix it, so that she could have all her applications work correctly.
It is an Asus CX5400; I had to unplug the battery to over write the firmware to allow me to install any OS I wanted. Then had to fix grub manually.
It took around 4 hours, a lot of that was opening the case without breaking anything.
Did you install Gentoo?

What distro did you end up with?
I installed Mint.
It is working really well.
Not very touch screen friendly, so may change. But she mostly uses the touchpad anyway.
If you install Gnome, the UI becomes more touch friendly. Firefox is still lagging behind in this regard, but Gnome Web usually gets the job done.
What about the Linux development vm built into Chrome os? It seems ok
It's still limited.
All of your Linux applications are second class citizen's.
Syncthing doesn't always start correctly, libre office doesn't work well.
The constant rebooting gets annoying.
In my experiance, you need a) a google account, and b) internet. Been a while since i used my old chromebook. Maybe i try to upgrade it too
