Microwave time

"How do you convert seconds to microwave time? let's say you have 60 seconds that would be 00:60 but if you have 61 seconds then it would be 01:01

What's the wizardry /g/?"

I mean, most microwaves will recognize base 10 seconds. I can put 0:90 on mine and it will go for 1:30.

Yup, about all of them does that. Wait until this guy see a clock with Roman numerals πŸ˜‚

This clock goes to 11! But it does it right after 1. Weird.

That's crazy. I have literally never encountered that. 100% of the microwaves with a digital display I've used shows 1:00 when you go past 00:59.

I just tested mine. It counts down 99, 98, 97, etc. it even does this.

This is really wild, Haha. Mine, and the five in the office dining room, and all other I've encountered act like the images below. If you turn the knob after 00:50 it goes to 1:00

Threads like that explain a lot about the state of the world.

Yeah, I always put my potatoes in the microwave for 6:66, or if they're somewhat larger potatoes, 7:77.

I microwave my potatoes at power level 7 for 7 minutes, 10 minutes if I have a lot of them. Also pierce them and cover them with a moist paper towel.

6:66 at 60% power is my goto for reheating large-ish dishes. 5:55 at 50% for medium-sized ones. 4:44 @ 40% for smaller dishes.

For baked potatoes, cover them in butter or olive oil, rosemary, and some salt, wrap them in foil and stick in the air fryer. Remove the foil for the last 3-4 minutes. Tastes way better than the microwave.

You can actually put 61 and it would still work. Up to 99. After that it will assume 1 minute instead of 75 seconds or whatever.

You don't have one of those rotary knob microwaves? You're missing out. The spinny wheel is so fun

I remember the ancient microwave we used to have.

No rotating plate, just a box with a knob on it.

Your food will cook for somewhere between 3 and 7 minutes. It will be unevenly heated. You will enjoy the aroma of 20 years of popcorn being blown out of the side.

Enjoy your half frozen leftovers, and kneel before the unkillable microwave.

Why not? Hitting 6-0 is faster than pressing 1-0-0. Although I just hit the +30 seconds twice so it doesn't matter.

Because no clock ever should show 00:60. Whatever you enter, 01:00 should be displayed.

60 seconds can have a totally different meaning from 1 minute. First, there are leap seconds, which cause a minute to have 61 (or more rarely, 59) seconds. Second, 1 minute conveys a different amount of accuracy than 60 seconds does. Just like you don’t measure house sizes in micrometers and the width of a hair in meters.

5
Albbireply

There's been 27 leap seconds since 1972. That's not going to make a big difference in how my microwave heats my food.

I'm pretty sure every microwave just splits the input in to the last to digits as a number of seconds and the digits before that as minutes. Then runs for 60 * minutes + seconds. So 0:99 is equivalent to 1:39 and 1:80 is equivalent to 2:20. I mean it is a little weird that the seconds can be >59 and extra weird that you can do 6:66 but it isn't exactly wizardry.

You reached the end
