Horizontally with a sledgehammer - it would have been more accurate to do it with the poor man lying down, less chance of a missed swing, but the animals probably wanted him upright for the maximum psychological damage to anyone who sees it.
It's honestly pretty stupid because it's a fairly quick and relatively painless way to die. All it shows is their stupidity because there are multiple ways of doing this same thing without creating a jenga tower cobbled together with masking tape attached to a dude's head.

I remember them clocking him on the jaw with the first swing, kind of low. It knocked him out of the plastic wrap and he fell to the floor, then the executioner steps over his body and brings the hammer down again. The last hit was out of frame.

Guy murdered someone and went to prison for it. Then when offered his freedom in exchange for him fighting, he agreed. Then as soon as he could, he surrenders to Ukraine.
As soon as Ukraine could get some Ukrainians for him, they trade him over.
Ukraine is just as culpable for his death, in my opinion. I don't blame them of course - I'd prioritize Ukrainians - especially young men who haven't murdered anyone. But in my opinion, I couldn't really care less about a treasonous murderer getting sledgehammered.
