[UPDATED] South Korea's impeached President Yoon detained in massive law-enforcement effort

Summary

Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was detained following a large-scale law enforcement operation at his presidential residence.

Yoon, who declared martial law on Dec. 3 to counter an "anti-state" opposition, had defied multiple summons for questioning.

Law enforcement overcame barricades and resistance from Yoon's security service, detaining him under accusations of rebellion.

The liberal opposition supports his arrest, while Yoon's party calls it unlawful.

Yoon’s impeachment awaits a Constitutional Court ruling, which will decide whether he is formally removed or reinstated.

Actually this IS PRECISELY a sign of a healthy system working against a lunatic in power.

But it's not a sign of a healthy system. Yes it's dealing with the fiasco, but there is still a fiasco.

No system is perfect. Any system can be exploited. This is a far healthier system than a lot of others in this world.

Compared to Korea it's doing fine. Jesus you people act like trump is literal Hitler. He didn't declare martial law and send the f'ing army to block Congress.

You're right, he's only a convicted felon.

All systems have anomalies. A healthy system addresses the anomaly per the rules of the system. An unhealthy system breaks to accommodate the anomaly.

True - I'll grant that. But the size of the anomalies in this case are very different as well. Yes Trump should absolutely be held accountable and it's a crime that he hasn't been. That said his crime wasn't on the same scale (yet - he still has a second term) as Yoon. This guy declared martial law because he didn't like the laws the legislature was passing. That's fucked up on a level Trump hasn't achieved yet.

so let me get this straight. you think it's bad to hold someone who attempts a coup accountable because… they're not currently running death camps but they have expressed plans to do so in the future? you think it's better to just not hold people accountable for their actions?

What? Whose ass did you pull that out of??? What a ridiculously stupid thing to assume. 🤦‍♂️

Last time he was president he had people disappeared into unmarked rental vans. This time will be even worse.

Here is an English live feed about the situation.

Investigators are already inside the residence and talked with Yoon and his group. They're planning to hold a briefing shortly.

It would be quite restorative to release the video with some snappy outro music

That dragon tears song at the end of the Simpsons episode about Chinese adoption would be fitting

I hope they send him the bill for the work-hours the police wasted. What a tool.
