NyQuil is a drug I absolutely won’t touch anymore.
I used it a few times (not abused, used properly) and the typical outcome is being stuck in a hypnogogic state all night having vivid and unpleasant hallucinations, unable to actually fall asleep or wake up fully. Not even a little bit fun.
NyQuils "tired" agent is diphenhydramine, which most people know as the brand name allergy medicine/antihistamine "Benadryl"
Benadryl fucks me up man. But I'm really sensitive to all sorts of downers. Any Opiate in any dose is lights-out for me. Apparently I had some pretty weird sleepwalking conversations with my (then-future) wife while on (prescribed) codeine+apap for a cough.
(For those that don't know, Codeine/"Tylenol 3" is a controlled drug in the US, requiring a prescription. Our OTC narcotic cough suppressant is Dextromethorphan aka Robitussin. Also, we have to present our ID to the pharmacy to buy pseudoephedrine (Sudafed)).
Even melatonin gummies are too strong for me.
I'll just stick to pot.
(Also for those that don't know, the new Zzzquil is just Diphenhydramine, which is very cheap at the Dollar store)
As someone who has abused it and kinda had a problem with it - that shit is poison. Literally. It has the same mechanism as deadly nightshade and a lot of poisonous plants, and it can be absolutely hellish. Totally legal in most places for some reason though. Feels like shit but paradoxically is also super addictive

I'm not doubting you, but there might be some other stuff to check out. NyQuil is as tame as they come.
I don't really consider anticholinergics tame.
And zzzquil has diphenhydramine, which is banned in the EU for similar reasons.
DPH is definitely not banned in the EU, but yeah, it's much less accessable than in the US.

Yeah, Nah, if you're hallucinating you didn't use it properly unless that's what you're going for at which point you absolutely are abusing it.
A hypnogogic state is a state of pre-sleep in which you may hallucinate. It happens normally to people all the time.
