some people misinterpret "freedom of speech" meaning universal freedom of speech. all it mandates is that the government isn't going to punish you for saying shit. It does not protect a person if other people punish them for saying shit.

lemmy.world

Another way to say that is: Freedom of speech isn't freedom from consequences your speech elicits in others.

I have written a memorandum that punching of nazis shall not be prosecuted if the person punching a Nazi is a sitting anyone.

I have also decreed that, by the laws of there no longer being laws, you may also slap, kick, purple nurple, spit on, or cause them to cry for mommy in any way seen fit in the process of de-nazification

1

You also aren’t entitled to a platform. A website not letting you post something isn’t about “freedom of speech.”

22

I don't want push back when I speak!

What he really wants with his freeze peach..

23

My bet is it's a trick to justify themselves to their dumbass fanbase later on. "They censored us for years, now we're in power it's only fair that we get to arrest people who criticize us!"

7

(Actual conversation)

Freedom loving conservative™: Speak your mind it's your right to say things even if it offends people

Me: The 50k dead Palestinian civilians won't bring back the dead Israelis from Oct 7th

Freedom loving conservative™: HOW DARE YOU, YOU ARE A TERRORIST SYMPATHISER AND YOU DESERVE TO BE DEPORTED, THAT SORT OF SPEECH SHOULD BE BANNED

Honestly, hardly anyone I know IRL knows specifics about Israel and Palestine.

10

I don't, but I've chosen not to. There are plenty of problems in my own country, let alone one half way across the world.

I'm just going to assume this is sarcasm, because otherwise, my hope in humanity starts wavering

Let's see, the conservative Christian right just voted in a nasacistic tyrant twice. They want to declare America as a Christian country. They want to abolish the separation of church and state. They want to teach creationism in schools. They want LGBT to register as sex offenders. They want to remove books from schools and libraries they don't like. They want to immediately execute every death row inmate. I'm not sure why I'm pissed at conservatives.

Really sounds like they want to make USA a region of russia.

17
lemmy.world

They want to abolish the separation of church Christianity and state.

FTFY

Watch how quick they backslide when a group supporting Islam or even Church of Satan ask for their dogma to be back by the force of law.

16

What do you mean? You can be any kind of Christian you want. We have religious freedom.

4
Kalystareply

Don’t forget they want to immediately deport anyone who doesn’t have lily white skin

4
lemmy.world

I live in a largely Christian community and have never heard anyone push for the US declaring a national religion. Is there some specific celeb or smth you hear say this? There are certainly people out there who believe everything you listed but that isn't even close to the majority of Christians, and most right wingers aren't even Christian.

2

Ty for actually having evidence to support your claim. That being said, a poll of 2k representing the entire nation is a bit sketchy, but regardless it's still a much higher number than I thought.

When conservatives whine at you like this, just remind them that they are in a cult. When they get mad at you, accuse them if 'censoring' your free speech.

I told a former schoolmate that he was acting like a snowflake and he lost his freaking mind. I expected it to bug him but holy crap.

12

This. So much this. Im tempted to try at the House just to see how well a campaign built on exactly this and progressive economics works

5

Like how we can’t call them gay anymore because gays get upset I worry about calling them cucks…but cucks like humilation so ¯\(ツ)

3

This is a very 2002 take.

Modern Conservatives just scream the N-word at the top of their lungs

25

Nah. We're not totally there yet.

A lot of them still need to dehumanize others by saying they eat pets first, pretend they're criminals and make them enemies by claiming they're stealing jobs

Over time, it will become normalised and an entire new generation of f wits will emerge

10

Me: Oh no censored by the state?

Con: uhm no a post was hidden on a social media website

23

It's even sadder than that honestly, it's actually "I suspect that my post wasn't recommended as hard as it could have been"

It isn’t now. Go watch a science video on Facebook and read the comments. Every time I report all the idiots, and every time Meta decides not to remove the blatantly hateful, false information.

I don't have a facebook account for that and a myriad of other reasons. But I agree I am lagging culturally because of it. I'm sorry that I get that way on here when I get all wound up.

6

No, you’re fine, I was trying to illustrate that it’s already, and has been happening for quite some time. I wouldn’t be on Facebook at all if it weren’t for my family. I absolutely detest what sort of drivel is allowed to be posted there.

3

I don't use Facebook but I find that on YouTube people will spout blatantly awful bigoted takes and any kind of response I make, no matter how much I try to clean up the language, will get shadow deleted

6

Had some guy calling everyone dunces he disagreed with on fb.

Apparently, it doesn't violate community standards

Either does porn, or any form of harassment

But apparently, me telling people that I was safe overnight at a hut when hiking, where and how many people isn't ok, and that post was removed

3

This is amazing, the only thing I have found close to this is in the US is when CSPAN allow callers. They don't even need questions, they often twist themselves in knots on their very own.

1

"Somebody disagreed with me! Conservatives are a persecuted class just like Christians and black people and those other races!"

2

It is a rhetorical device. Do you really need that explained or are you just employing one of your own by pretending to be obtuse?

I guess you can only have imaginary conversations. That kinda answers my question, thanks.

-21

You are asserting things you have no knowledge of. You've never seen me having an "imaginary conversation." You genuinely seem to be confused and dysregulated, with wild overreactions to minor or even imagined irritations. Please take care of yourself.

You mean stuff like "we should deport illegal immigrants" and "abortion is murder"

Because conservatives aren't really afraid to say them. At worst, he's just trying to avoid another ban.

They aren't afraid to say "your body my choice" and "repeal the 19th" nowadays either

24

"Your body my choice" has genuinely been the goal for a generation. They've been salivating to have RvW torn down probably your entire life. The only thing that was missing was the pithy slogan, but the sentiment existed, openly.

Those are actually Libertarian views posing as Conservative views because Conservatism has been taken over by billionaire libertarian think tanks, looking to lower their taxes.

-37
pawb.social

This is a no true Scotsman fallacy. The simple truth is that conservatism always served fascists, it's just more overt now.

40
DarkCloudreply
lemmy.world

I didn't say anything about fascism, that's a whole different topic entirely. So weird that's you've brought a third term in whilst claiming I was playing on the no true scottsman fallacy (which I don't believe is the case).

Conservativism is about the family unit, the church/traditional culture, and serving your community and nation. Conserving tradition in the name and style of your ancestors (so Confusionism is fairly conservative for instance, as it focuses on ancestors worship and supporting your parents).

Libertarianism is about reducing government, avoiding taxes, and maximizing individual "freedoms".

They're simply two different ideologies. Has nothing to do with a not true scottsman fallacy. Has to do with the fact they're obviously not overlapping sets of values, and in fact oppose each other greatly and often.

However American have been tricked into thinking they're compatible.

Your comments and those supporting it are proof of this. You've been had by billionaire think tanks and mega churches. Brainwashed into seeing them as the same ideology when they're actually in opposition.

Foolish American. Brainwashed people are bound to vote against their own interests. Lambs to the slaughter.

-4
pawb.social

Remember when Elon claimed to be a libertarian before literally joining the establishment Republicans? Libertarianism isn't real. "Libertarians" bend the knee to conservatives and fascists so quickly it doesn't matter what the ideology supposedly says. It doesn't matter that you didn't "say" anything about fascism. If you can't connect these two things, that is simply a failure in critical thinking.

1
DarkCloudreply
lemmy.world

I'm the one saying Libertarianism has been sold to Americans under the brand of Conservatism.

... and it's important to point out (particularly to young people) that these two philosophies don't mesh.

You're free to say "No! All you conservative voters are actually fascists and you're evil and stupid and need to stay away from everyone!" - and continue to see whether that shaming moralism of young men starts winning them over. You're free to persist with declaring everything right wing fascist.

After the last election some might suggest it's not winning any votes.

-1

The idea that you're a credible advisor when you can't even keep track of whose arguing what is ridiculous.

If you don't have a response and want to take a break, you don't have project that onto me. You can just stop responding and walk away.

1

It's not the Scotsman fallacy. You don't even address the arguments and try to show how it is.
