Back in the day, Queens was mostly farmland. Right after WW2 the New York City GIs wanted houses, and didn't want to be too far from their old neighborhoods. Farms got sold but the original streets had already been mapped. That's where this monstrosity was born.

I looked up this monstrosity on a map and it seems it alternates Avenue, Road, and Drive north to south and Street and Place west to east
