But who is the author of said thoughts? From whence do they arise? If you look carefully you'll find that there is no author and that the self is an illusion that arises from the nature of consciousness. This is the essential insight of Buddhism and other contemplative traditions.
I like to think consciousness is just a higher self that creates a projection that we understand to be our "self". The projection and its source are both representations of the same self, making my thoughts a product of my self. Or in other words, I can claim to be the author of my own thoughts.

It generally blows the minds of people who do, but minds are so varied its possible we're misunderstanding each other when discussing voices in head. Similar to the question if two people see red, but only know it's red because someone taught them, can we be absolutely sure we both experience the exact same "red"?
