That's camping with all the shitty parts and a really nice cot.

Wind, rain, dust, falling shit, bugs, animals, etc. You can get a similar atmosphere by having a tent and opening the vent flaps. Or like, sleeping under a tarp to mitigate rain if you really want that outdoorsy feel. I knew a guy who slept in a hammock on nice nights but I fear the skeeters.

That's camping with all the shitty parts and a really nice cot.

That is indeed the joke.

There are nice bug nets made specifically to fit around hammocks. You see the sky and not be eaten alive.

8

Some hammocks even have the bug net built in creating a nice bugfree cocoon.

Did you know that the weather in the mountains can change rapidly and without warnings?

This would only be cool if you're somehow guaranteed zero people/predators or cameras in a large enough radius that you won't ever be seen or attacked by an animal. Fucking under the stars on a real bed sounds pretty cool. But there is a building in the background. I would be too paranoid that someone is watching with a telescope

29

Forget zero people/predators, I need a guarantee for zero mosquitoes and flies

21

I would be too paranoid that someone is watching with a telescope

I'd just start beating off while staring straight at it with an expressionless face.

You could have walls but no roof

5

To make it even crazier, you could have a roof that is transparent and you could open. Tada you get as much outdoor as you want, without being soaked wet by the thunderstorm.

Yes all those natural predators in Switzerland you need to watch out for.

1

I would trust everything you read on Google. While Switzerland probably does have some wolves and bears realistically you're never going to encounter one.

So... you get room service? Like... how far do these workers stay from these rooms? Can they see you pee and take a dump? Where do you clean yourself? Do you get a refund if it rains? Is a simple hotel room somewhere nearby cheaper than this gourmet outdoor experience?

So many questions....

2

little late but I kinda feel like responding:

The beds are outside in the countryside, usually on fields that are owned by the farmers who offer the "rooms", so they're a bit secluded.

You're brought there by said farmer, he shows you around a bit, shows the fridge, etc. Then he leaves again.

If you need any room service, you just call up the farmer and he comes back to bring it.

No idea about toilets, but I think you'd also have to walk back to the farm. Same if it rains. Pretty much all of those openair hotels are ran by those kinds of farmers anyway, who were used to hotel guests as they've been offering "sleeping in the hey" kinda things since years, so for them, it's pretty much the same, except being a little (sometimes a lot) further away and being logistically a bit more challenging.

3

There's a solid foundation for this idea but I still don't see it putting a roof over my head to be honest.

Am I the only one that would actually really enjoy this?

Being outside in the mountains with fresh cool air, but you actually have a proper, comfy warm bed to enjoy as well?

Sign me the fuck up.

Until it rains... or storms... or there is thunder or snails or dogs barking or whatever. Hell no "-"

I would have to imagine they have something in place for when it rains, thunder (without rain) would be awesome, you're in the mountains with few neighbours so wouldn't worry about dogs barking, and if you're worried about snails you could put some salt down I guess.

4

I was on an island in sweden once, we made outdoor vacation, pretty cool. We were on a hill on that island, in a tent and there also was thunder.

And lets say... being on a mountain in thunder is not the safest thing to do

You know, there's this thing called "camping", you should really look into it.

If you get a big enough campervan you can put a nice big heavy mattress in it.

1

A campervan isn't really camping. It is just a hotel room on wheels.

Just get one of those expandable soft top ones and add a zipper to it 🤔😂

Sure let me just bring my whole-ass double bed and mattress with me when I go camping 🤡

11
lemmy.world

shit I have a pair of inflatable twin mattresses that can be joined together. open up my sleeping bag, put it down as base warmth, with a pillow and another cozy blanket... That pretty much meets the definition

5

My parents had a bed built for their minivan with ample storage and a thick layer of latex foam. They did some trips around the US using that, though ultimately it turns out they're just not great sleepers.

0

I would but only if the temperature is right. That picture looks like it drops below freezing tho.

If you ever slept outside, you know how good it can be. Fresh air, cold winds. Only and only if nothing goes wrong.

There was this bamboo treehouse that my wife and I slept in on a vacation. It was really nice and relaxing. We plan to go back soon.

Someone has a fundamental misunderstanding about what a room is...

10

That doesn't seem unworkable. Just add a few walls and a roof and it would be a nice place to stay.

Wild predators are one thing but what about bats with rabies? You wouldn't even know you got bit until it's too late.
