Why has complementing become such a hard thing to do anymore. It's almost like most people are super insecure these days

I have a classmate whos doing super well in all our courses at uni. Breezing pass through Calc 1, Calc 2, Calc 3, Differential equations, Electricity and Magnetism... you get it. Talking with our common classmates about our courses, everybody always told the same thing about him: "He's just super lucky", "That guy is the luckiest person I've met". All while I'm thinking what is wrong with them? Yeah sure passing Calc 1 with the bare minimum grades could be considered lucky... but breezing past through all our courses while having such high grades that he was exempt of every final?

I remember telling a classmate that he wasn't lucky, he was just good at studying and disciplined about his work, even if he didn't look the part because he was kind of a goofy guy always joking and having a good time. I've never gotten such a weird look in my face like the one that classmate gave me. Some guys are such fucking assholes to each other that even chance of accepting somebody is better than them at math is insanely alien, let alone COMPLEMENTING another guy. I imagine is even worse when complimenting looks because every man's default when hearing that stuff is "oh you gay".

I can only imagine the shit they were saying about me behind my back because I said that classmate was good at math. Jesus.
