Someone here made a post here about how countries that are more developed have higher anti depressant usage and it got me thinking

So this was the post in question. This connection intrigued me in into researching why and here's what I have concluded.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a psychological theory that suggests human beings have five different levels of needs to be fulfilled in a sequential order. These are physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. As countries get more developed, they are more likely to meet the basic needs of their population (physiological and safety needs). However, fulfilling higher-level needs becomes more of a challenge.

  1. Access to mental health care: Developed countries generally have better access to mental health care, which includes counseling services and medications such as antidepressants. This access can lead to a higher prescription rate for these medications, as more people are being diagnosed and treated for mental health issues.

  1. Awareness and destigmatization: In more developed countries, there tends to be more awareness of mental health issues, as well as greater efforts to destigmatize them. This can lead more people to seek help and receive prescriptions for antidepressants as part of their treatment.

  1. Lifestyle and stressors: As countries develop, residents may experience higher levels of stress due to increased work demands, pressure to conform to societal standards, and greater exposure to social comparison through technology and media. These stressors may contribute to the development of mental health issues, which may in turn lead to higher antidepressant usage.

  1. Individualism and isolation: Developed countries often prioritize individualism, which can contribute to feelings of isolation and loneliness. As Maslow's hierarchy suggests, humans have a fundamental need for social connections (social needs). When these needs aren't met, individuals may be more prone to depression and anxiety, leading to an increased need for antidepressants.

  1. Focus on self-actualization: According to Maslow's hierarchy, once basic needs are met, people focus on higher-level needs such as self-esteem and self-actualization. In developed countries where physiological and safety needs are usually met, there may be more pressure to achieve success and personal fulfillment. This pressure and the potential failure to meet these higher-level needs can lead to mental health issues and increased use of antidepressants.

TL DR, as countries become more developed, their population may experience a shift in focus towards fulfilling higher-level needs as per Maslow's hierarchy, contributing to the increased prevalence of mental health issues and the usage of antidepressants. Factors such as better access to mental health care, greater awareness of mental health issues, lifestyle stressors, and individualistic societies further explain the relationship between development and antidepressant usage.

Interesting analysis! I've always found Maslow's hierarchy a useful framework to understand human needs. It makes sense that as basic needs are met, people in developed countries might struggle with higher-level needs like self-esteem and self-actualization, which could contribute to the need for mental health care and antidepressant usage. It's important to keep spreading awareness and destigmatizing mental health so that more people can seek help when needed. Great post, thanks for sharing your insights!
