TL;DR

Overall, based on relatively limited published clinical data, our review does not support using blue-light filtering lenses to reduce eye strain with digital device use. It is unclear whether these lenses affect vision quality or sleep, and no conclusions can be drawn about any potential effects on the health of the retina.

Australian public school funding falls behind private schools as states fail to meet targets

Reply in thread

Doesn't this article show that the funding received by private schools is actually more in most cases?

Even if funding was exactly the same, private schools are most definitely providing more per student than public schools. Unless you believe those fees being paid are entirely pocketed by the teachers. Where exactly do you believe those fees are going? Those fees, along with the funding, are going into facilities, equipment and personell that public schools simply can't afford.

Sure, the quality of education isn't entirely based on funding. But to sit here and claim funding doesn't help is a little privileged. Kind of like how people who say money doesn't buy happiness, usually have money. It's easy to say money doesn't improve education, when you have the money.

I still don't see why private schools should be receiving more government funding than public schools though.

Roaster or bean recommendations

Here are a few that I'd recommend. I tend to prefer a more traditional style of espresso.

  • Proud Mary: Humbler. Works great black or with milk and easy to dial in. Haven't tried any of their others yet.
  • ONA: Raspberry Candy, but most of their milk-based coffees are a pretty good bet. On the more expensive side.
  • Lime Blue Coffee: Their blend is good. Also a cheap way to try out some single origins. On the more affordable side in general and they'll often have sales on ozbargain.

I'm sure I've missed it, but what exactly have they considered as "high coffee consumption"? Some of their findings show some level of coffee consumption can be beneficial, or inconclusive. Which is usually why most of these studies can be summed up with... just don't overdo it.

Australian public school funding falls behind private schools as states fail to meet targets

So the article shows public schools aren't getting the funding they should be getting (below 100%), while private schools are more than covered (over 100%).

I'm sorry, but the rest of your commentary is really a straw man. You're just trying to shift focus away from public schools not getting their share of funding, while private schools are getting more. And instead saying that funding shouldn't be the deciding factor on which school to send your kid to. No one said that. The fact is, public schools aren't getting the funding that was committed, while private schools are getting more than what was committed. Giving public schools the amount they should be getting doesn't stop you from sending your kid to private school. And it's disappointing to see people trying to excuse it or shift the focus elsewhere.

Good coffee for under $5?

It's tough because that's about the price you'll pay even in NSW. I don't mind paying it if I know they're using good coffee and the barista is good.

Although it's also the reason I invested in a good setup for home. I get coffee out less now, but try to pick the spots I know I'll get a good one.

What's your coffee making style?

My preferences are:

  • Espresso
  • Piccolo
  • Moka Pot

I invested in a Breville Dual Boiler a few months ago and haven't looked back. Using a Kingrinder K4 hand grinder until my electric grinder arrives. Finally able to get coffee on par with what I'd buy out.

Love a Moka Pot. It's all we used to have growing up and still enjoy having it. But it's not the same as an espresso. Everyone has a preference for how they like coffee, I wouldn't necessarily call anything other than a Moka Pot a compromise, just a preference.

Moka Pot is what I'll always recommend to someone who wants to make coffee at home and is starting out with nothing. In my opinion it's the cheapest and easiest way to get good coffee with little effort.
