Well, since the last game fizzled out, does anyone have any suggestions for games they'd like to play? I'm open to GM anything ;)

I am game to run whatever you guys want to play.

I have experience playing 20xx, Troika, FU, Whitebox and a variety of other systems.

I am also willing to try any rules light system (as it is best for play by post, especially here on Lemmy).

Any genre as well, I'll go with the group consensus. Give me suggestions and we'll see where we end up. Let's get our game ooooonnnnn! ;D

[LASERS & FEELINGS] - A Spaaaace RPG by John Harper aka Let's Get Our Galaxy Quest On! (3-4 players)

SAVE THE COSMOS, GET THE GIRL, BE A ROBOT WITH A SUPERIORITY COMPLEX DISCOVER STRANGE NEW LIFE AND MEET OR EAT IT. WELCOME TO: GALACTIC FLEET!

Okay, since the John is Possessed game didn't end up gaining traction, let's do a game of Laser's and Feelings. It's a one-page space rpg by John Harper. We'll keep it fast and loose, and base this one the tone of Galaxy Quest/Star Trek/The Orville etc.

  • Choose a Style for Your Character: Alien, Android, Dangerous, Heroic, Hot Shot, Intrepid or Savy.

  • Choose a Role for Your Character: Doctor, Envoy, Explorer, Engineer, Pilot, Scientist, or Soldier.

  • Choose Your Number, from 2 to 5: A high number means you're better at LASERS (Technology; Science; Cold rationality; calm, precise action). A low number means you're better at FEELINGS (Intuition; Diplomacy; Seduction; wild, passionate action).

  • Give Your Character a Cool Space Name Like Dirk Fark-hopper or Something:

  • In Your Inventory: You have consortium uniform (with built-in vac-suit for space walks) a SUPER-SWEET-space-phone-communicator-thing (with built in translator), a variable-beam phase pistol (set to stun, of course...usually).

  • Pick a character Goal: Become Captain, Meet New Aliens, Shoot Bad Guys, Find New Worlds, Solve Weird Space Mysteries, Prove Yourself, or Keep Being Awesome.

  • You have a ship: The Technicolor Nebulae, it's Well-Armed, with a Cloaking Device, only it has Horrible Circuit-Breakers.

STORY:

ALIEN BRAIN WORMS WANT TO EMPOWER THEIR GIANT DEATH RAY WHICH WILL DESTROY AN ENTIRE SOLAR SYSTEM!!!

Requested Collected Toppi Vol. 1 and the Inter-Loan Library Gave Me Vol. 1-3!

Requested The Collected Toppi: Vol.1 The Enchanted World from my library's interloan service, and the library that responded gave me Vol 1-3! Three library loans for the price of one, haha.

I dig Toppi's linework. He's a very technical artist, and the work is very detailed and intricate. I'm also a sucker for black and white comics, which is mostly why I requested him after seeing a few people recommend him online for b&W bandee dessinee. The stories from Vol. 1 are all dark fairy tales basically, they're quite short and simple in the storytelling, not a lot of dialogue or plot. But damn, are they atmospheric.

If you have a local library, you should definitely check if they have an inter-library loan service. The majority of comics I have requested, they've been able to find. I also got The Collected Crepax Vol.1 from them as well, which I'll post when I get the chance.

Been in a B&W type of mood, if you guys have any more recommendations, let me know ;)

edit: Also, noticed that lemm.ee scaled the image, so here's a link to the larger original in all it's glory: https://ibb.co/prxDH8Hs

JOHN IS POSSESSED!!! [Everybody is John](3-5 Players)

Okay! Time for a new freeform game using the Everyone is John rules. Since I don't like the connotation of gamifying mental illness, in this context John will be possessed by various entities (your choice of ghost, demon, aliens, Cthulhu, etc) as the "voices" in John's head.

Creating a Character:

Come up with a crazy entity to possess/telepathically command/transmit suggestive ideas to John. Make it something cool like a Reptilian Shadow Warrior from Merrix IV, or Sumerian Trickster God. Come up with a short, but descriptive backstory to give your Voice some flavor.

You'll have these three attributes:

Willpower: This is a pool of points used to control John and improve your chance of success in taking an action. This starts a 10 pts. It will go up and down as the game progresses.

Skills:These are specialized things you can do in-game. "Damn Good Driver", "Strong Like an Ox", "Silver-Tongued Devil". You get two of these, three if you decide to start with 7 Willpower instead of 10.

Obsession: Your obsession is the game's winning condition. At the end of the game, after everyone runs out of willpower, you'll tally up every time you fulfilled one of your obsessions (if someone else does something that fulfills one of your obsessions you count that too). Obsessions come in three levels:

Level 1: Easy to do things

Gorging on Junkfood, Jaywalking, Yelling Loudly Indoors, Smashing Ketchup Packets on your Head.

Level 2: Moderate difficulty things

Sneaking Into a Private Club, Convincing a Stranger to Give you Their Pants, Running a Marathon in High-Heels.

Level 3: The nearly impossible

Blowing Things Up, Stealing a Fighter Jet, Ransoming a Kidnapped Soccer Team, Hijacking a Nuclear Sub.

How to Play:

The game begins with John waking up and one of the voices taking control. You bid any amount of your current Willpower, high bid wins. All of you will PM me a bid (to keep it secret from everyone else) and whoever wins will take control of John initially. It'll then be up to you to steer John towards completing your obsessions to rack up points for winning the game after everyone's Willpower is depleted.

To accomplish actions you'll roll a d6. If you have a relevant skill to accomplish your actions Roll 3 or Higher to Succeed, if not Roll a 6 to Succeed. To effect the outcome of the roll You Can Spend Willpower to Add a Point to Your Roll, this can make a success automatic if enough Willpower is spent.

Whenever John gets hurt, wakes up, a voice fails a roll or completes an obsession a test of control will occur.

Everyone will bid for control, the person who currently had control could win the bid again to keep control. You aren't required to bid, and can claim you are bidding to fake out your competing voices. The voice who wins the bid loses the Willpower they bid, everyone else keeps their Willpower they bid.

To Start:

Make a post below detailing who your Voice will be (Alien, Demon, Malevolent A.I., etc...get creative with your character!) with their Skills and current Willpower. DM me your Obsessions so you can keep them secret from the other players, and also let me know your initial Willpower bid to take control of John first.

After you've all posted, and I've received the initial bids for control of John, I'll narrate the first scenario and play will begin with the player who won the first bid.

SO: EVERYONE, LET'S POSSESS JOHN!!!

Murakami: An Observation After Three Books

I read and enjoyed Kafka on the Shore years ago (although I could barely tell you what it was about now). After enjoying Kafka I've tried a few times to read some of his other stuff and inevitably end up stalling out. This has happened with IQ84, Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, and now with Sputnik Sweetheart. It's always during the first chapter that I get bogged down in this miasma of being bored, and the reoccurring theme of one of the characters going on and on about some classical composer and the sublimity of their works (blah blah blah). It starts to grate on me as pretentious, boring and droll. Does anyone else feel this way? I was honestly kind of surprised that he has consistently used this same device in multiple stories I've read, to the point that now it just feels silly that there's always some character right from the get go that is this BIG classical music aficionado. It might seem to be a weird thing to key on, but it just bores me to encounter it over and over, right from the start.

Got a Crazy Deal on the First Pressing of Relatives in Descent by Protomartyr

Found Protomartyr's Relatives in Descent on vinyl at the local antique store for $15. Turns out it was the first pressing. Looked it up on Discogs and it's going for ~$80. Not that I care about online resale value, it's just cool that it's a semi-rare piece.

I just started buying vinyl, so this was a really nice surprise to get out of the blue. Great album by the way, Night-Blooming Cereus is my favorite track right now. If you've never got a chance to check out anything by Protomartyr I highly recommend them. I believe their newest album is Ultimate Success which is a banger as well.

[Celeste Classic] Hard Work But Satisfying!

Been playing Celeste Classic on Pico-8 for a few months off and on. Kept getting stuck at 2300m and giving up. Even though I hate looking up walkthroughs or guides, I swallowed my pride and went online for a hint on Reddit then was able to get through 2300m. Feels good to finally beat it after all these months. I have to say though, 2300m was still the hardest of all the levels. Such a tricky level to get through right after obtaining the double jump! I might go through and get all the strawberries eventually, but for now I am going to take a breather. Definitely going to start playing through the PC version of Celeste now.

Quick Improv Game Using GS Howitt's RP6 **[STUPERHEROES!]**

This is a swashbuckling superhero comedy scfi adventure.

Inspiration: The Tick, Megaton Man, Any other superhero parody

In this world:

  • Superheroes are ridiculous buffoons with quirky powers (Cactus Man, Ice Cream Sundae Avenger, Papercut Pete)

  • Villains are equally as silly and generally pathetic (Taking over the local Sears, turning everyone into teddy bears, writing their name on the moon)

  • Whenever a hero or villian does something they succeed, it's not exactly how they intend it to succeed (Papercute Pete tries giving a henchman a papercut to drop their weapon, but the henchman instead becomes a blubbering mess because he can't stand even the smallest amount of blood)

  • The world is incredibly fragile, buildings topple when barely impacted, cars crumple at the slightest touch, things break in spectacular fashion, natural and man-made disasters occur frequently and with devastating force.

You are a team of stupid superheroes seeking to stop The Big Squeeker from turning the city into squeaky pet toys. Already many citizens and the local police have been turned into various squeaky toys, squeaking incessantly, driving everyone batty.

Right now, the team is fighting a giant squeaky robot that is knocking over buildings and causing havoc downtown.

If you can defeat the robot it will reveal the location of the squeaky ray which is transforming the citizens into squeaky toys.

Character Creation:

  • What weird power do you have that nobody else can do?
  • What is your biggest fear?
  • What crippling flaw do you have?
  • What do people call you?
  • What do you look like?

To accomplish an action:

Roll the dice and tell me a reason why you succeed, for each acceptable reason I'll add one to your result. If you can come up with 3 or more acceptable reasons, you succeed automatically. Otherwise, roll a D6 and add 1 for each acceptable reason.

  • 6 or more: You succeed cleanly.
  • 5: You succeed at a steep cost.
  • 4 or less: You fail and things go badly for you.

Failure: Each failed roll you'll take a condition. Each condition weakens future rolls by one.

To Roll: Use the free dice roller by /u/[email protected] linked here: https://tinyurl.com/everypostroll

Be sure to add your character's name and the action they are taking in the roll dialogue. Then copy the link generated to your post. For each roll copy the roll of the person who last rolled, so we can keep our rolls in the same history together.

Working Class Perspectives in Works of Art and Entertainment?

So, it dawned on me while watching a documentary directed by an obviously well-to do upper-middle class guy, that most media is slanted towards upper-class sensibilities and perspectives more often than not. This is especially prevalent in movies and tv where the main characters are typically upper-class or even rich. I'd always had an aversion to these depictions, but I've never fully articulated my disillusionment with it. The problem is that these depictions of "average" families are woefully unrepresentative of your average person.

My question is: what is some media, in any format, that is informed by a working-class perspective?

I've found a few obvious authors out there, like Steinbeck, Bukowski and Irvine. But am interested in not only authors, but artists of all kinds and different mediums. Alternative comix and independent cinema, and things like zines spring to mind as mediums that might have more representation along those lines. Are there any specifically worker derived works that any of you can recommend?

Quebec at Angoulême 2025 - Excellent Article About Québécois Comics at the French Comic Festival

Great article about Quebec comics at Angouleme and a good look at the festival in general. Lots of discussion about the current state of the festival and some of the internal divisions of the fest between the organizers and artists. There's been some controversy regarding 9e, who organize the festival, and the creators that attend over the committee's refocusing on a more commercial outlook for the event, and more disgusting developments such as the rape of Chloe, a former employee that had her employment terminated after the horrific incident. This has caused many publishers to create a counter event in protest, with some publishers looking to avoid the festival for the foreseeable future.

A very interesting and informative article. I'm still quite new to the BD scene, and had only hard about the festival in Angouleme vaguely, so it was an intriguing look into the preeminent BD comic festival. I also discovered some new publishers to check out such as Le Monte-en-l'air, La Pasteque and Les Requins Marteaux. There's a lot of great pictures too peruse as well.

Interview with Olivier Schrauwen on Making his Brilliant Comic "Sunday"

Sunday by Olivier Schrauwen tells about a day in the life of a fictional version of Olivier's cousin. The entirety of the over four hundred page comic is contained in a single Sunday in the life of Thibault, centering mostly on his internal thoughts and mundane doings on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

It's an excellent exercise in turning the mundane into an interesting and humorous piece of story art. Funnily enough, I didn't intentionally do it at the time, but fittingly read it over the whole course of my own lazy Sunday.

This is an interview by Matt Seneca of the Comics Journal probing Schrauwen on the creation of Sunday. I highly recommend reading Sunday whenever you have a lazy Sunday of your own ;)

Mario Bros and I Were Born in '85, This is What I Bought For Our 40th B-Day This Year

Been wanting a NES for a minute. Decided on buying myself a toploading unit for my 40th birthday this year. The American NES toploaders were too pricey, but the Famicom AV was much more affordable and with the bonus of AV instead of RF only like the US model. Just by coincidence I bought Mario Bros as my first Famicom game since that was the cheapest, best quality game I could afford and it just seemed right to make it the first Famicom game I owned. But after I purchased it it dawned on me that it was delightfully appropriate to buy Mario Bros on it's 40th anniversary as my 40th birthday present this year :D

Looking forward to grabbing an Everdrive when I have the cash and really getting down and dirty with it. I have a whole bunch of homebrew and hacks I'm itching to play.
