Beeper Mini is the iMessage for Android app we’ve been waiting for - Mishaal Rahman
It looks like Beeper has purchased the software from the person who developed this, but his GitHub repo for it is still up.
He has also created a way to permanently side load apps on iPhone without jailbreaking. I imagine Apple will be working on both of these "problems".

She also gave a lot of attention to vaccine skepticism by making Jenny McCarthy seem like a medical expert on Autism.

Probably a stupid question, but will we ever have something like a microwave to make things cold? Is there a reason this can't exist?

I expect this post in a couple days: "How do I remove a paper towel that is frozen to my bottle of wine?"

YouTube TV, which costs $73 a month, agrees to end “$600 less than cable” ads
Reply in thread
I went to YouTubeTV earlier this year and it's definitely cheaper than RCN, which recently bought WOW. I have Comcast as a choice but they aren't better. The base rate for RCN that they advertise is $59, but they add four different fees that you don't see until your first bill: Sports Surcharge, Broadcast TV surcharge, franchise fees, and Entertainment Networks Surcharge. After those add-ons it was $115, so I'm saving money because the YouTubeTV price is actually advertised properly, without these ridiculous add ons.

Outcry after Spanish TV reporter ‘groped’ live on air
Reply in thread
Between this and the soccer event, I feel like the Spanish authorities will want to make things especially difficult for this guy. If for no other reason than to appear to the world that they are not a sexist country.

What Linux distro surprised you the most?
I was surprised, in a bad way, at how difficult it is to get any VNC running. I tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and base Debian, but couldn't get any VNC working. The closest I got was with Debian, but it gave me a different desktop than what was coming out the video port to my monitor. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has had better luck with anything.

Trump Explodes in Unhinged Tirade in Courtroom, Attacks Judge and Prosecutors, Then Storms Out

Isn't it typical for a lawyer to be held in contempt for not following court rules? Will there be contempt proceedings near the end of the trial?

Beeper has been working in this space for awhile - there's no way they would publish an app with a copyright violation. I assume they have a workaround for that aspect.

I didn't see anything like this image in the pytube-fix repo. Do you have a repo of the web interface somewhere? That looks really handy.

X can now ask users for government IDs to verify their paid accounts
Reply in thread
Just reading the text on the X site has some interesting contradictions, such as:
Benefits: Benefit from increased trust from other users who will see your ID verification label when they hover over your blue check mark.
More benefits to come: Speed up the process of obtaining a blue check mark through a simplified review process.
Translation: "You can trust us more because we will take more shortcuts in verifying people."

If I understand correctly, someone other than your ISP could see the name of the website, since it isn't encrypted. I think it would bounce through several servers that could possibly read the data.

Huge new satellite outshines nearly every star in the sky
Reply in thread
They probably threaten some space telescopes, too. The Starlink satellites are a little higher than Hubble. I would imagine they might take up a decent amount of field of view to Hubble, by being closer.

What's a great but uncommon comedy movie we should watch?
Quick Change. It's full of big stars (Bill Murray, Randy Quaid, Geena Davis, Jason Roberts) but I never hear people talk about it. I find it pretty funny.

Reddit Refugees on Lemmy, how are you guys liking lemmy so far?

I expect some apps to eventually allow a user to merge like-named communities into a single "virtual" community. The Connect app already moved towards this by presenting your subscriptions grouped by community named, rather than instance. So I see all my "technology" communities listed next to each other, for example.

I would think that an IP address tells you the domain name by doing a simple DNS lookup.

Romney to Retire, Calling For a ‘New Generation’ Beyond Biden and Trump
I wonder what he means that Biden is under investing on military spending towards China? Is there some defense spending bill that he has vetoed?
