Unrelated to this exact video, how are people viewing piped videos? It just constantly loads for me, not quite sure what the issue is.

Eh, his calculus was likely the following:

• Trump has in the past threatened economic or financial penalties over minor, and major, disagreements
• Trump is in his last term, so he likely isn’t concerned with the political, legal, etc. ramifications of his actions
• Apple, as a company, still manufactures the majority of its product lines outside the US
• Trump is still trying to use tariffs in the US to manipulate markets and force business actions
• Either I capitulate and save Apple from potentially billions in fiscal pain and / or years of legal representation to fight said pain, or make this change and avoid all of it
• The cost of this capitulation is mostly a PR / company image issue + plus dev time to implement the change, versus a very real monetary loss

I don’t agree with his decision, but given the options available I do agree trying to keep the peace with the vindictive, unstable world leader of Apple’s largest market is in their best interest.

Probably has no actual permissions for that, just relaying his personal thoughts or answering information-only questions.

The Catholic Church is worth >= $73 billion USD, so this payout was (rounding up) 1.1% of total wealth. On the road now but I’ll add some more to this comment later today.

Edit: Some edits to the above. Didn’t really account for lawyer fees, so subtracting 33% (low end estimate) I’d get $430,769.23. Still a pretty substantial payout, but them lawyers do be taking a sizable chunk.

Kinda hard to gauge the economic cost of sexual assault, but from some US workplace stats in 2024 it looks like:

• average loss per workplace injury: $1,120
• average loss per medically consulted injury: $48,000
• average loss per death: $1,540,000

Note that deaths include lost future wages too, over a much larger timeframe than non-fatal injuries.

So adolescent sexual assault slots in between medical injuries and deaths, but roughly 9 times as financially devastating as a physical injury. Also somewhat crazy that the original ask by the claimants was $2B, which would have been 70% of a death’s payout per victim.

For the entire Catholic Church yes, but sounds like this could bankrupt the NY region if more than $800M was awarded. All lawyer speak to likely try and resist higher award totals…
