Why are people so interested in mass adoption of things like fediverse?
Yeah, I never get all these comments saying "if Lemmy wants to get big" it needs to do X (probably some Reddit feature), and " if Lemmy wants to succeed" if needs to do Y (some niche thing most people dont need).
Like, it's already successful doing exactly what it was intended for.
Possibly Lemmy is a lot of peoples first foray into FOSS software, and being the biggest and best, and profits go brrr isn't the aim.
Capitalism is a hell of a drug when it's all you've known.

Wikipedia could shut down in UK after online safety law passes, Government told
This bill needs to be killed. It's just more surveillance wrapped in saving the kids.
I've had people say to me "But what if you're partner was attacked, you would be glad that CCTV/message snooping was there" when debating these topics.
I'm not going to lie, that's hard to argue against, I would if it helped catch them, but I'd rather it didn't happen in the first place. I don't know where I'm going with this...

Unambitious King’s Speech suggests a PM who has lost focus and is looking at a post-election future in Silicon Valley
I've been saying this for months. He strikes me as not being in it for his party, his country nor his political legacy. He's doing everything for himself and his business connections.

It's weird that there isn't a US-specific Lemmy instance

Isn't that the problem being stated in the OP haha.

Tom, can I request that we keep our blocklist empty?
I'm generally against defederation as much as possible, but would personally prefer that the proper NSFW stuff wasn't on my feed.
It can be a bit jarring to be scrolling through content and there's suddenly an anus or something on my screen...
I don't think it's too much for people to have a separate account for porn and such if they want to see that, and it helps protect the feddit.uk instance from legal issues.

How do I not stop feeling like I am doing nothing outside work?
Why do we devs have this weird need to do our jobs in our free time. We put this weird career specific cultural pressure for some reason.
Do other careers have this need to do work in your free time? You don't see brick layers itching to work on building a little house on the side, or lawyers just looking for a case to practice on.
Why is it just devs?

Second home communities
Hard agree on this. Especially if it leaves a community unmoderated, and unmoderatable due to the only mod being absent.
If you're creating a community, you should at least be attempting to run it. Not just making a land/power grab or putting your flag in the ground for the sake of it.
I'm glad you've raised this here, I was wondering whether to do something similar due to https://feddit.uk/post/114858

Feddit.uk is shaping up to be a UK version of Reddit. With most UK subs in one place.
Yeah, it's really great. I'm a bit sad that UKCasual has ended up somewhere else though...

Any interest in making an Open Source AnarchyChess ?
Sounds like fun. We've been waiting far to long off Gary Chess to release Chess 2. Let's do it ourselves!

You're on a UK community here buddy. We had police before the USA was founded. Your link literally says USA policing was based on the british model.

Why do so many website fail at explaining what they represent. I didn't really get what this was because it focused on its technology, not what it was aiming to achieve.
I installed it anyway, as I'm looking into synced Notes apps and that's what it seemed to do and this thing is looking pretty powerful actually. It might replace more than just Notes.

Wednesday Whinge - 25th October 2023
I managed to push a razor blade (just a loose blade, not a razor head) into the side of my right index finger tip this morning while cleaning out my bathroom bin. I think the only thing that stopped it going further was my nail.
Safe to say, having a half functional index finger on my dominant hand is making everything hard work, but I only have my self to blame for putting it in there...

The Wednesday Whinge - 2nd August 2023
It was my birthday this week. Not only was the weather shit on the day for the first time I can remember, but I also got food poisoning from celebrating my partners birthday, and had to do all of the driving.
Good otherwise, just not the simple, relaxing time I'd hoped for.
