Νομίζω αυτή είναι η έρευνα: Europe’s environment and climate: knowledge for resilience, prosperity and sustainability

Satellite data reveal massive scale of routine oil pollution in oceans. See the map

Oil slicks from ships and offshore oil platforms cover nearly 1.6 million square kilometers (618,000 square miles) of the ocean surface each year, an area slightly larger than the nation of Mongolia.

The estimate comes from a recent report by Skytruth, a U.S.-based nonprofit that used satellite imagery, machine learning and vessel tracking data to trace global oil pollution in the oceans between 2023 and 2025.

How do we build social movements in an age of collapse? An interview with activist Tadzio Müller - Cont'd

Solidarity prepping is different from individualistic prepping in that it focuses on social relations. And this is not just a bunch of anarchists saying that. A general in the Swedish military said exactly the same thing: in a catastrophe, the most important thing is social relations. So anything that builds resilient social relations is a step towards having agency in a catastrophe.

EU accused of hiding environmental impact of data centers

The complaint lodged this week by Lighthouse Reports, and first reported by POLITICO, accuses the EU executive of setting up rules keeping the public from seeing how much energy and water are used by individual data centers.

EU Weighs Delaying Methane Rules as Energy Prices Rise

Amid political pressure and rising energy prices, the European Commission is considering pausing a part of its landmark methane regulation, which is set to take effect in January.

The move comes after French President Emmanuel Macron urged the Commission in a September 18 letter to postpone new methane reporting requirements and ease other fuel-related rules in response to increasing costs exacerbated by the Iran war.

Restoring nature is our only climate solution

A review of available techno-fixes leads to two unavoidable conclusions. First, our problem is not just carbon emissions per se; it’s also how we humans inhabit our planet (too many of us using too much stuff too fast). And second, we need non-technological ways of addressing the climate crisis.

Chat Control: All European's communications under the microscope

  • Data Journalists Investigation: How the EU will scan our WhatsApp and how chat control will work on major platforms. The “key,” encryption, and the dark web.
  • Giorgos Pleios to Data Journalists: “The major platforms trade in personal data. These measures are part of a global trend toward the suppression of freedoms.”
  • The role of Artificial Intelligence: When it detects a file it judges to be suspicious, it will report it to the Data and Incident Assessment Centre, which will decide whether to refer the case to the authorities of the EU member states.
  • The content of communications will be scanned on users’ devices (client-side scanning) before it is encrypted and sent, and this will apply even to end-to-end encrypted conversations. So there will be no such thing as encryption…
  • How we got here: The votes and stages in the long-running effort to impose the measure.
  • Kostis Pieridis to Data Journalists: “There are grey areas and questions of legality. After September 11th, Security prevailed over Freedom.”
  • Enforcement handed to private parties – Cryptography experts sound the alarm.

For Climate-Vulnerable Countries, Debt Costs 25 Times More Than Climate Action

Across 65 highly climate-vulnerable countries analyzed, debt servicing is expected to consume 65 percent of government revenue in 2026.

Compounding the problem, much of the international funding intended to help developing countries address climate change comes in the form of loans.

“A lot of that debt was taken on very unfair, illegitimate terms and shouldn’t really be part of the economic picture today,”

The report proposes several ways to break the cycle.

On AI-generated articles

I thought of sharing some issues that preoccupy me here, because of how active piefed development is. Btw thank you all for your hard work!

I have noticed that more and more articles are created with LLMs without disclosing it. So, it seems to me that if someone wants to avoid posting this sort of content, one needs to at least:

  • check how many articles the author posts per day in the specific site,
  • then if the author really exist and
  • finally copy-paste part of the text in a couple of ai-detector sites.

Initially, I thought of making a post for a feature request like the one that detects AI generated images, but for text. But I can't because if I got this right, the ai-detectors may flag an article as ai generated when the author is not a native english speaker [1].

Of course the feature that allows us to label ai-generated content ourselves before posting it is very important. In a way my questions are related to something else: what to do before that. As briefly as I can, here they are:

  • does the process mentioned above seem adequate?
  • if yes, what else can someone do to check an article before posting, and are there any alternatives/variations to this process?
  • if no, what would you suggest?

Amazonian study identifies most effective ways of conserving biodiversity and carbon - Lancaster University

“While no one strategy is a silver bullet, our results provide clear evidence that we should begin by prioritising the forests we have left,”[...]. “And protection must go beyond avoiding deforestation. Avoiding forest disturbances from wildfires or logging delivered the greatest benefits for forest biodiversity.”

No single intervention was sufficient to reverse biodiversity and carbon losses across the entire study area.

“Restoration is essential where forests have been lost across large areas. But our study shows that investing in new forests makes little sense if, at the same time, we fail to protect existing forests,”

The paper: Protecting tropical forests is more cost-effective for biodiversity and climate than restoration

Oil Lobbyists, Anti-Abortion Groups, and Tech Giants Flock to Reform Conference

Nigel Farage’s party is welcoming polluting interests and radical pressure groups to its annual gathering.

Corporate titans including Google, Meta, and TikTok will be appearing at Reform UK’s annual conference this week, rubbing shoulders with fossil fuel interests, far-right politicians, and Christian rights groups.

The conference, designed to showcase the party’s policies and politicians, will be attended by figures from some of the world’s biggest tech companies – several of which have donated to funds and projects associated with U.S. President Donald Trump.

They will be joined by the likes of Fuels Industry UK, a trade group for the oil sector which counts BP, Shell, and ExxonMobil among its six members. Reform, whose senior figures frequently deny climate science, advocates for the dramatic expansion of fossil fuel production in the UK.

It’s no wonder Reform is slumping to third in the polls

Face Recognition Is Becoming the Norm for Dating Apps

Archive link

In 2025, AI deepfakes flooded Tinder. According to the company, 98 percent of the content-moderation actions on the app were focused on combating fake accounts, scamming, and spam, pushing the company to expand its moderation efforts for its 60 million global users.

Among current online daters in the US, nearly half have been targeted by a dating scam,

More than a dozen major dating apps and sites use face recognition to verify users, often relying on liveness checks, 3D authentication, video selfies, or biometric ID to demonstrate humanness.

Underpinning the shift, however, is a grim irony: In attempting to solve the problem of knowing whether someone is real, Big Dating is potentially creating more opportunities for privacy and security risks by forcing users to give up biometric data, while also legitimizing a culture of surveillance.
