I think what it is for most people is some lame app they will download for only that specific purpose. The only reason why iMessage is popular is it's the default. If the EU passed a regulation to force Apple to have a default messager that only supported SMS, and iMessage to be a separate appstore app, or even just an extension for the messages app. it would die within a year.
