What weird false belief did you have as a kid?
I always thought cigarettes contain tar, as in the substance asphalt on the road is made from. It always felt weird to me, why would they put it in the cigarettes but I figured maybe they need it so the tobacco doesn't fall out or something.

Poland pushes for EU to scrap daylight saving time
I had such high hopes back in 2018, I think France was pushing for it. Now 7 years later with still no progress I think the best bet is to move to China, India, Russia or Hawaii, or any African country except Egypt. Or South America except Chile. You see the overwhelming majority of people in the world don't have the DST bullshit.

Yes, exactly. The comic was published on October 13, 2008, according to Explain XKCD, that's probably why iTunes is in it.

What's a time you stuck to your principles despite it being inconvenient to you?
Not drinking alcohol when I'm alone or not in a good place mentally. And yes, this can be hard depending on the social circle.

Hypothetical-- you can only choose two cuisines to eat for the rest of your life. What might they be?
Chinese food! More specifically, Sichuan and Northwestern style food.
I don't need to pick a second one.

Do you know what weirdcore is? How do you define it?
more like a revival of early internet aesthetics, i.e. shitty 3D graphics, low quality digital images, and WordArt from the late 1990s

I don't really need comments, only RSS. Hugo is a great piece of software, I actually use it for my personal webpage. It would be an option for the blog too, my only gripe is that it adds some friction. For example if I want to embed images, I have to upload them somewhere, and manually insert the filename. I also need regenerate the site if I add new posts. I know this can be automated using scripts.
With Ghost it's very simple, I can just write a post, upload the images, hit "Publish" and done. There was even a mobile app for writing new posts, but it doesn't work anymore.

I've already looked into bear blog, I really like the philosophy behind it. The reason I don't use it is because ideally I want to self-host, and bear blog is not open-source (edit: cannot be self-hosted easily). Also, I want to embed images in my blog, and from what I've seen, you have to either take care of the image hosting yourself or pay a monthly fee. It also looks like the backups are only text, no images, which could make migration to a different platform painful. I had the same issue with blogger.com back in the day, it was possible to export the text, but then the image links were all still pointing to Google's CDN.

What opinions about the tech industry do you feel comfortable expressing here, but not in public/at work?
Reply in thread
I would argue that people you are describing enjoying Tik Tok and being too lazy to look stuff up themselves, are not really engineers. You could also frame it as, information technology got so mainstream, even people with no technical background whatsoever are part of it. Engineers and tech nerds still exist, but they are a minority now.

That's a very refreshing take and it reminds me of a simpler time, before "Web 2.0". I can do HTML/CSS no problem, I actually teach a web development course in high school. For my own blog it might be too much of a distraction though, I really want to focus on the content.
But I agree, building a website from scratch can be very rewarding :)

Video game programming, because I've been doing that for more than 20 years.
