I remember the vitriol of old reddit. I believe you are contributing to that more than helping.

Reddit was never pure in terms of discussion or kindness; I think you've got some heavily tinted rose glasses on. But reddit succeeded and brought you the deep, insightful discussion you crave because the enthusiasts were there. And enthusiasts are human, they are not all heartless cogs there to infodump and complain. The most knowledgeable, well-read, and well-spoken people I know are also ones to crack jokes and make their passions accessible and interesting.

If you want healthy discussion, I strongly believe you should allow at least a bit of levity and let people speak a little more freely. Chastising people for not being insightful enough will turn away plenty of the people you want to keep.

Let neckbeards and normies mingle. It's okay to have fun.

Also worth mentioning: this is Microblog Memes. It's in the name.

Why the 1000-hour light bulb Phoebus Cartel story IS NOT an example of planned obsolescence.

#NUANCE NEEDED.

Alec is making a point specifically about the 1000 hour maximum which was for INCANDESCENT lightbulbs. You know, the ones that aren't used anymore.

However, modern LED lightbulbs are typically over-driven and under-cooled. This drastically shortens their lifespan and worsens efficiency. But this might just be because it's harder to sell a $20 light that lasts for 20 years than it is to sell a $5 light that lasts for 5-10.

lemmynsfw.com has been defederated

If I believe the mod of the community in question is telling the truth, Seems like the incident in question was just a misunderstanding. The community name is ::: spoiler spoiler adorableporn :::

I will refer to this as "the first community" in the following text.

The mod of the community copy/pasted the dictionary definition from vocabulary.com, which contains the word "childlike".

IMO, the community in question is not trying to skirt the line of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). In fact, there is a subreddit of the same name which has absolutely nothing to do with people that appear underage.

That said, the same mod also moderates, and posts to a different community with a concerning name. The spoiler below shows the name and the first three paragraphs of the sidebar as they appear:

::: spoiler spoiler Community is now open to posting. Posts not having verification info will be removed.

FauxBait is a place for sharing images and videos of the youngest-looking, legal-aged (18+) girls. If you like fresh, young starlets, this is the place for you!

Just to be clear: We only feature legal, consenting adults in accordance with U.S. Laws. All models featured were at least 18 years old at the time of filming.

:::

Also, I'm not sure if the timestamps can be trusted, but said mod was instated as the only active mod of the first community at the same time that Ada made this post, which would mean that the mod account could not have been the one that wrote the original sidebar of the first community. Not sure what to make of that. For the sake of balance though, said mod does seem to be doing verifications of the age requirements. Also, the modlog for the first community shows two admin removals from at least 10 days before this debacle, both of which err on the side of caution, so at least the admins to seem to care about enforcing their rules.

The situation seems very muddy, but I personally don't think the original incident was that big of a deal (assuming the mod is telling the truth). However, I certainly don't blame the blahaj admins for defederating as it's certainly the safest option. Wouldn't want blahaj lemmy to get taken down :| Also happy to see less pron in my feed; I'm too lazy to block the individual /c/. Personal Instance-level blocking can't come soon enough.

PSA: Switch 2 has no PWM dimming and no noticeable dithering

Reply in thread

##PWM Dimming

in digital electronics, it's hard to send 30% power but easy to send either 0% or 100% power (full off or full on). So instead, to dim a light, we can just turn a light off and on really quickly. If you turn it off 70% of the time, and turn it on 30% of the time, it'll look like the light is at 30% brightness - if you do it quickly enough. But doing things faster is also difficult, so sometimes it's fast enough that we can't perceive it turning on and off, but slow enough that it still causes issues in sensitive people.

Fun fact: if you see LED lights blinking in videos, but not when looking at it in real life, that's when the PWM dimming frequency doesn't quite match up with the camera's shutter speed or framerate. This is known as aliasing: when there's a slight mismatch in frequency of two evenly-spaced patterns, and combining them results in a new pattern.

Dithering

Not sure exactly what kind of dithering they're referring to, but I'm going to guess it's color dithering.

If you only have white and black pieces of paper, but you want to make gray, you might cut them up and arrange them in a checkerboard pattern. If you view it from far enough away, you might perceive it as gray rather than pure black or white.

This is basically what dithering attempts to do: when you can't mix colors, it's a method of representing more colors than you actually are able to use by patterning them in certain ways.

Not knowledgeable enough about screens to know why fans are worried about dithering, or why Nintendo might have been considering using it in the first place though.

I never knew that USB-C extensions are not allowed for a reason

Reply in thread

Safety regulations are written in blood. Electrical fires were indeed a problem. It's why there are rules on how many outlets need to be in a room, how spaced out they need to be (to curtail extension cord usage even when the builders are trying to be cheap and stingy with outlets). It's the reason why we have breakers and GCFIs and RCBs and AFCIs. It's the reason why we have electrical certification bodies like UL which won't certify your cable or appliance if the cords are too thin.

There's a lot of smart stuff we do behind the scenes to make dumb cords safe because even smart people make dumb mistakes.
