If OP has hundreds of hours to sink into a game, FFXIV is a great choice. I've got about 1k hours in it but I dropped off after the latest expansion in favor of Guild Wars 2. I just got sick of grinding levels all over again with each expansion, whereas GW2 has never raised the level cap and you don't have to grind for BiS gear every time new content drops.

Guild Wars 2 had lots of optional PvP content, including World versus World and smaller ranked PvP. I'm not into the PvP side of things, so I'm not sure how balanced it is, but it's a major focus of the game so there's plenty of content there.

The latest episode of season 2 is, in my opinion, the best single episode in the entire series so far.

It's hard to describe what it's about without spoiling it, because the mystery of that universe is part of what draws you in. In a way, the comment you replied to is a major spoiler since you don't ::: spoiler spoiler find out you're in a "simulation" until near the end of the game. ::: But it's an incredible game that I recommend to any JRPG fan.
