Do you often hear the ringing of switching power supplies and devices when you are in a quiet space?

I have tinnitus and it sounds just like power supplies, except it comes from nowhere. So, when I hear the squeal, I turn my head. If the squeal noise follows the movement of my head, tinnitus. If it stays put, power supply!

It's like skunk and pot! (I'm in Canada, it's legal and everywhere.) If I smell it, I look around. If I see a burrow, skunk! If I see a dozy looking dude with red eyes...

The PC is Dead: It’s Time to Make Computing Personal Again

I really like self -hosting, and some great concepts are coming out of containerization, but I also feel like the next generation are being fed a steady stream of "Rent, lease, stream" to such an extent that kids I know literally don't understand files on their computer, only cloud connected apps and content. I kind of wish there was a philosophy of tech course that made people carefully consider some of the trade-offs we're constantly making with the big five.

What is one moral you have that most people don't agree with?

Reply in thread

I agree, and I take it this far: "I worked hard and paid for my house, why should some lazy loafer get housing for free? I paid 24,000$ in tuition, why should kids get free college?" I think that, at some point, one guy has to be the first guy to benefit from progress, and all the people who didn't benefit just have to suck it up. I would 100% pay a much higher tax rate if it meant that homelessness was gone, hunger was gone, kids got free education... I'm Canadian, so I don't need to say this about health care. Yeah, I paid an awful lot of mortgage, but if someone else gets a free house? Good!

We All Know One of These Folk

Calgary Shawarma. I don't know his name, but my grandfather was sick and I was stuck at work (working on a phone line repair at the auto shop next door.) Dead of winter, miserable cold. Then my mom calls: Grandpa died. Shawarma guy overheard this, I'm sitting in my van crying. Knock on my window. Guy hands me a Shawarma. "Boss, you should come in to my shop, have some food, get warm. No charge." He sat and listened to my grandpa stories until I had it together and could go back to finish my job.

Seriously, total stranger, and he was there for me on one of my worst days, and I'll never forget.

Can I still bypass Microsoft account creation when reinstalling windows through the "reset this PC" option?

Reset, once it's done downloading (if you go cloud), pull your network cable. When it gets to "let's get you online" hit shift f-10 which pulls up the terminal window. Type oobe\bypassnro and hit enter. Stay offline, and get back to the same spot in the install process but this time you'll have a "I don't have internet" link as an option. It'll protest, but you can then move forward with a local account. I literally did it yesterday.

Once you have a local account built, Windows will give you "sign in" alerts in settings and in security.

Just for the record, I use Linux. I do however work in a Windows shop and understand that "just use Linux" isn't at all helpful when someone asks a Windows question.

This dude

I have two indoor cats. They're constantly trying to get out. My neighbors have two outdoor cats. They constantly try to get into my house! Do you know how hard it is to take out garbage when there's four cats vying to pass through any door you open?
