Less social media IMO, more the weaponization of techniques first researched in the 60s-80s made real and pushed via automaton to all corners of the public internet.

The reason you become vulnerable is because you abdicate control (most had no idea) of your feed to providers that own domain names.

This was a co-option of how the internet worked previously.

one of these is making a profit off of you, the other is a community tended commons. there is no comparison.

pro-tip you can run gimp on WSL2 and have its xwindow appear within windows just like a normal application. The ONLY way to run gimp on windows imo.

tbh, as a small instance, i might be defederating meta. im not a fan of the person that has everything through theft and scam.

im running 50 users right now, subbed to A LOT of communities, seeing db growth of about 100mb per day.

shows how desperate they really are, honestly feeling like we should push for more communities to commit to longer. even just to the end of the week may create capitulation. not that ill go back!

i keep hearing people call for this like its going to happen and be the only way things will be. Look at reddit, look at the history of some of these subs.

there will always be multiple copies of various communities. what software gives us the ability to do is sort and filter and tag (we need to add this) to our hearts content so instance admins and users have control over what comes across thier feeds.

Joined communities will have many of the same centralization problems reddit has now. I've seen this call mostly from users who were on reddit long after it was large. It seems many have no idea that almost every topic on reddit has 4-6 subs around it usually.

smaller instances give you more control over your feed generally but discovery is on you.

i do expect better filters and controls in the future

MCoC is now on full auto, is not replying to anything and is just taking over subs and re-opening them with no moderators other than MCoC

Report it to the police, corporate and consider talking to your local news. Make sure school admin is aware as well. If you can shift them to different schools (i know not always possible) do so.

My usual response to this kind of thing is to get louder not quieter, that said, I'm also able to put on an angry enough face to make people cross the road which is not a power everyone has.

Go with your comfort level but I would urge reporting to the police and doing what you can to get out of what sounds like broken area.
