Self Hosting- Security recommendations

Hello folks! I am looking for some guidance or direction on how to make sure my "server" locked down as much as possible. I know there are several websites/guides out there but was hoping I could get someone to recommend some good ones to use that cover all the bases solidly.

There are just so much info out there, wading through looking for a solid guide when you ignorant is hazardous.

Server is running Mint and hosts my Plex/Radarr/Sonarr stack. Using a locally hosted reverse proxy for any outside connections.

This started as a project to learn linux, so things are a bit shaky on linux understanding but getting better. I used GPT assistance to lock it down to the best of my ability, making sure (or I think) that most obvious firewalls rules were setup...ect.

Thanks for your help :)

Using KDE Plasma on Pop

cross-posted from: https://sh.itjust.works/post/61415164

Hello! So I am somewhat new to linux, been trying to use it as my daily driver for about 6 months now.

Hopefully its ok to ask linux questions here: Right now I have Pop 24.04, and generally it works ok but I have frequent mouse lock/focus issues in games, which I can normally get around using proton/sdl video driver commands in Steam, but it is a constant issue.

At the suggestion of GPT, I tried loading into Gnome rather than the default Cosmic and that issue went away. So pretty sure this means its something with the cosmic composer with my setup. Really tired of beating my head against the wall with this constant issue and happy it's solved, but not sure I really like Gnome.

I DO like KDE Plasma and since I am using Dual monitors with VRR makes since to go to versions 6, but worried about dependency issues when I update. POP uses older KDE version and it would pull different versions of things like the Framework..ect

How big of an issue is this? Are their ways to block pop from pulling older versions? Any suggestions or thoughts?

Thanks!

Android Work Profile- permissions/access

Hello folks! So I joined a new company and am debating if I want to carry two phones around- work and personal. However I am concerned what the org can see/access on the phone (Samsung Galaxy)

In order to access my email/calendar I need to setup an Android Work profile. Some basic searches online indicated that the organization can only see/access/control things on the work profile and nothing beyond.

Looking at said work profile I only see installed basic apps like gmail, calendar, contacts. No other management or control apps like Workspace One or a work specific VPN are being forced. I have worked at other organizations that required those, and I instantly opted for dedicated Work phone- as those give up a TON of control to the org no questions asked.

Very aware both Samsung and anything Google are privacy concerns in general, I do what I can on this device to limit it.

My question here is mostly privacy for what my org can see/access beyond the android work profile. The only overlap in apps I can see is for texting- the work profile seems to share the same SMS app as primary profile. AKA I worked in IT, I know how creepy some of us can be LOL- if they are able to log texts, calls, non-work email...ect I would like to know if possible.

Any thoughts or information the community can share? Thanks!

Edit: I should note I read the Google articles specificly on this and they are pretty clear. Just not sure how much I can trust them... https://support.google.com/work/android/answer/7502354#zippy=%2Ci-own-my-device

Two in one stupidish question- Debate about United Healthcare CEO and best place to have it

Hello! So two things:

  1. I would like to have a discussion about the UHC CEO killing and if it is at all any different than the ~45 murders a day in the USA...(other than the obvious "he was rich" one). -Typical Christmas family get together brought this up as a topic and was curious about the different perspectives. Argument made by others was "this sets a bad precedent", and the response was "how is this any different than someone getting murdered for literally any reason". Hate, lust, money, your car..whatever the motivation, how is this any different?

  2. Is there a better location to post said discussion topic?

I mostly lurk Lemmy, so not really sure how to find the correct communities for said topic.

Thanks!

Android app- back button feed reset

Hello! Curious I can not seem to see a setting for this, if so I apologize.

When I am in the feed and if I hit the back button on my android one too many times it take me to the community bar. Totally fine but this resets where I was at in the feed. I can't find a way to get back to that feed other than clicking on the community or "all", which resets my location.

Any ideas or am I missing something obvious.

Thanks!
