I haven't seen it myself, but searching for a similar description came up with "Storm of the Century," a TV miniseries written by Stephen King.

Glad to hear it! I did a Google search, but I tried a few different terms other than pearls, I eventually found someone else had asked a similar question on Stackexchange describing them as marbles, and it was answered with that miniseries.
